flying to Frankfurt end of Sept. for a bike and barge.down the Mossel. I want to find the cheapest and easiest way to travel to Koblenz. Looked up Europe train fares and thought I had found one that was 81.E. went back in and couldn't find it. Is that each person? Also saw one for 37.E 59.E.
Arriving at 11:10a.m. so need a train later. Is the train station right in the airport.
I think I am correct in saying that it depends on the time that determines the price.
Looked at reserving a car and driver and got an estimate for 140. E. total, taxes etc.
Two people so we could share that.
We would also need transport back to the airport for a flight to Barcelona on Oct. 4th. at 10:15 a.m. from Merzig. I have found a very early train which means we would have to leave the boat at 4:00a.m.! Is is possible to get a car and driver. Had a quote of 450E !!!

The train station is under Terminal 1, but I don't know if you can go directly to Koblenz from there. Likely, you will have to take it to downtown Frankfurt Bahnhof and then transfer there.

Actually, I cannot follow your post enough to understand exactly what it you want to do. Maybe some one else can help you or you could restate your scenarios.

When asking about prices in market based product, it is helpful to post 1. where you looked and 2. which days you are traveling.

For example, I just pulled Sept 4 out of hat and looked at www.bahn.com. You see several advance purchase fares at 19EU each from Frankfurt(M)Flughafen to Koblenz Hbf.

When you booked a morning flight out of FRA and you are staying so far away, you naturally have to start your trip very early in the morning. This should not have been a surprise. If you don't want this, either pay dearly or stay closer to FRA on your last night in Germany.

You should not buy one of the €19 saver fare tickets at DB - these tickets are non-refundable on the day of travel, and what if your plane is really late?

Here's what to do.

TICKETS: After leaving the security area and hitting an ATM, go to FRA's Regionalbahnhof station (there are two different stations,)go to a ticket machine and buy a RMV ticket to Koblenz for €24.

TRAINS: You can find schedules for all trains that are usable with the above tickets at the DB itinerary page:
http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en

Enter your information and specify "only local transport" under "means of transport" to get the right trains and connections. If you don't do this, you may pull up schedules for high-speed trains, which you cannot use with these tickets.

Once the schedules pop up, click on the arrow at the left of each one to find connection information and travel times. On most days there are direct RE trains that take 1.5 hours to Koblenz and that run every 2 hours.

Merzig - FRA: You can leave at 4:41 am, or you can do the smart thing and travel the night before to Mainz and stay there instead. From Mainz, the trip is only 25 min. and there are dozens leaving that morning.

Yes, thanks very much Russ. This flight on Air Canada is arriving in Frankfort at 11:10 on Sept. 26th.and we have a hotel room in Koblenz for that night so don't have a problem with times but would like to wander around a bit in Koblenz before boarding our barge the next afternoon Sept. 27th. I had looked up the Rail Europe site.
I did see trains that stopped in Mainz for several min. before heading on to Koblenz but also saw direct. then I got the bright idea to have a car and driver since I was not travelling alone this time and we could share the cost and just sit back and relax. The quote from quotes@tripfiller worked out to 70E. each and so if we can just get the tickets for cheaper when we get there that will be great. Heading back to the airport on Oct. 4th. was even more of coarse because of the distance, if available at all.

Greg, we tried flights out of Germany and Belgium before we settled on this morning flight to Barcelona. It was not a thoughtless decision. Oct. 4th. at 10:15 so we did know it was going to be early. That is why I joined the forum, to see if someone had a another idea. It was difficult to find a flight out on a Saturday. We finish the Barge trip in Merzig on Oct. 3rd. at supper time but can leave the boat on Oct. 4th. and fly out Oct. 4th. This is a budget trip and we were trying to save another hotel cost but it does look like going to Mainz the night before is the way to go. I am not a beginner traveller and most always travel alone and figure it all out. But I do appreciate the help.
I can bumble along early in the morning and sleep later.
As my daughter always says when we go anywhere, "sleep when you die".

rosemaryb: I missed the part that said there will be TWO of you traveling to Koblenz. So for tickets, instead of (20) €24 tickets, try this instead to save about €12:

At the FRA Regionalbahnhof ticket machine, buy RMV tickets to Mainz (€4.35 each) and one Rheinland-Pfalz ticket (daypass) for two adults (€27.) €35.70 total instead. The R-P ticket/daypass is good from Mainz onward. And if you need to take a bus in Koblenz or if you want to take another train that same day (to Braubach?) the R-P Ticket/daypass is good for those trips too for the rest of the day.

These tickets / passes are good for the same regional trains.

"...would like to wander around a bit in Koblenz before boarding our barge the next afternoon Sept. 27th."

If you'd like to visit an attractive village with an outstanding castle you can tour, try Braubach - only 11-12 minutes by train from Koblenz.

If you go to Mainz on Oct. 3 you can use another R-P ticket for that trip (as long as it's after 9 am.) On Oct. 4 (Sat.) the R-P ticket is good at ANY hour and will get you from Merzig to Mainz. In Mainz you'd then buy another €4.35 each RMV ticket from a ticket machine there to reach FRA.

In Mainz, the Königshof is near the main station. You could also stay at the Ibis (which is a short walk from the old town) 1 block from the Mainz Römisches Theater train station (just one stop from Mainz' main station on the way to FRA; the R-P ticket will get you there too.)
