Scottish Haggis - UK Trying to Overturn U.S. Import Ban...

http://www.nytimes.com/2014/07/05/wo...o-us.html?_r=0

because real Haggis includes sheep liver, banned from legal consumption in the U.S. since 1971 - imports of British meats following the Mad Cow outbreak have further complicated legally importing haggis.

Anyway an interesting article about haggis - in some ways the national dish of Scotland it seems - thanks perhaps to Bobbie Burns.

The article says haggis can taste good but that the haggis sold in the U.S. sans sheep liver tastes not like the real thing.

I've shied away from haggis - questions - how do yous who have tasted it find it tastes? (Like chicken perhaps!) and is it easy to find in Scotland say in pubs - or is it mainly eaten on Burns Day or Hogamany?

Curious.

faggots or black pudding>

I'm not gay but I have had black pud and did not care much for it - haggis does not seem appetizing to this largely non-carnivore.

It's essentially a large sausage probably with more wholesome ingredients than the average sausage.
It can vary in quality, but can be delicious.
There can be silliness about it.
I remember a conversation
Dim Bulb: Yuk, a sheep's stomach?
Me: nowadays, it's usually sold in a plastic covering
Dim Bulb: You folks eat plastic?

You actually just eat the inside and you sometimes get it sliced as part of a full Scottish breakfast

>> an obvious joke<<

kwren: Maybe you know PQ better than we do -- when he isn't posting about all things trains . . . about half of his other posts are 'jokes' and the rest are links to legit news articles he's glommed off the internet.

Since this thread had both it is really REALLY hard to tell.

Do they really think there's a market here?

Many (most?) americans don;t even eat lamb (never mind odds bits of sheep) because the flavor is too strong. We are a nation of beef eaters - granted also chicken, turkey and some pork - but very few people want any parts of sheep.

Have you ever eaten scrapple? It reminds me of that.
I am not fond of lamb and it doesn't appeal to me. Lamb is very pricey in our supermarkets in Fl. I bought lamb chops for someone last week and cooked them for them. Just not acquired a taste for them.

That's odd nytraveler: But maybe it is a regional thing. Elephant Bar - surely an example of chain 'middle of the road' dining on the west coast, southwest, Florida and couple of other states . . . the biggest individual seller is lamb shanks. Even w/ all the Asian fusion, blackened whatever, burgers, seafood, etc on their menu.

And most fine dining restaurants offer lamb. That is NOT to say there will be any clamoring for haggis

That faggots=I am not gay comment is NOT COOL, not cool at all.

This is what happens to your brain when you are unemployed and spend your days smoking mj with high school dropouts.

All the lonely people, where do they all come from?

PS

It is Rabbie Burns, not Bobbie Burns.

It is Hogmanay, not Hogamany.
