Venice - 3 nights WHERE? - Back to Venice and home
My husband and I are celebrating our 50 anniversary with a trip to Copenhagen (4 nights) and Venice. After 5 glorious nights in Venice, we have 3 nights that I have left open to ask forum members where they would recommend we spend them. We won't have a car so travel must be by bus or train. We are traveling in mid-September. Suggestions would be much appreciated.

Providing some idea of what you like to do would net you better answers. From Venice you could go to the Dolomiti mountains, or Florence, or Verona or Bologna, or Ferrara or Ravenna or Milan or Lago di Garda. Do you want it be romantic, or scenic, or great wine or great pasta or fabulous unique art --- ?
Also some idea of what you want to spend would keep people from wasting their time suggesting things that aren't anything at all what you might enjoy or consider reasonable.

Sandralist - You are right about it being too general. This is our 4th trip to Italy and enough of big cities. Would like to be in smaller town within 2-4 hours by train, bus or ferry of Venice. Off the beaten path. Thanks.

If a "glorious" experience is what you are after, and you're spending 5 glorious nights in Venice — and it seems you are departing Venice for home, why would you want to leave Venice in mid-September? Why would you not want to end your anniversary trip on a super high?
I could see adding something "glorious" before Venice, like one of the Italian lakes, but that would depend on how fabulous your home in Venice is and whether you could rearrange some lodging dates.

I think you can get to Asolo by train from Venice. Check Trenitalia. Might be lovely for a 50th wedding anniversary since the town is partly famous because Robert Browning and Elizabeth Barrett Browning spent many years there, they so loved it, making it there home away from home. I think Asolo would be big enough to be interesting for 3 nights, and you can probably take and trains to some neighboring towns, or arrange for a driver to take you to a nearby winery or cheese producing town.

I just checked, and it appears the closest you can get to Asolo by train is Montebelluno, and from there it would be optimal to take a 20 minute taxi ride rather than fuss with buses. No doubt any lodging in Asolo could arrange a pick up, and there are likely taxis right outside the station.

Yes, Asolo is lovely, but I couldn't imagine a visit without a car. There are just too many lovely vistas along steep hills, seeing them all on foot would be exhausting.
Browning's former home is the Villa Cipriani, now owned by Massimo Zanetti. It was recently restored in 2012. It's a lovely place to stay.
Bassano del Grappa has the charm of the river and mountains, but after Venice, it's kind of a let down. If you happen to be there on market day, it'll be packed with tourists, packed with outdoor merchants, buying and selling mostly cheap stuff. And then there are the car, vespa, and truck fumes.
Renting a car and driving after 5 glorious day in car-free Venice is not my idea of fun, unless you're headed to another week of September in Tuscany, also glorious. I love to drive in Italy, but I prefer to get that out of the way first, dump the car, and make Venice my last stop. It's so nice to relax on the water before going home.
