Impressionist Exhibition at the Musee Marmottan

I'm leaving for Paris Tuesday, and just bought a ticket online for this Exhibition. I'm glad I went ahead and bought before getting to Paris, as they were already sold out for next week.
The Exhibition has around 50 privately owned works, many never shown publicly before, and is running until July, started sometime in Feb.
I saw some reviews on Trip Advisor just after buying my ticket, mostly highly praising the artworks, in spite of very long lines, but saying it was difficult once inside to see the paintings because of the crowds. And especially the large tour groups were hard get around.

Of course I'm still anxious to go, as it's an opportunity to see works I would never see again, but I was wondering if any of you have been, and if it was really too crowded. I'm also wondering what time of day might be best to avoid the crowds. Maybe lunch time? Some did say that it was OK in the area of the permanent collections, and at least I won't have to stand in line for the ticket!

sue, i hadn't heard about this, but we went to the Marmottan when the Monet exhibition was on at the Grand Palais and if they are exhibiting these works in the basement, there should be plenty of space, in theory.

don't expect to get in straight away even with pre-booked tickets; we had to wait about 30 mins before they let us into the Grand Palais and we had season tickets. But they do that so that it doesn't get too crowded.

i would go early in the morning or late in the afternoon in order to avoid the groups. However, there is always the chance that other people have thought of that too!

good luck!

Hi Sue4,

You will find another thread about the Matisse/crowds on this board with a variety of observations.

I booked for a guided tour (I think groups are small around 15) for Thursday, June 19 at 12:15. I thought I might do a morning tour of the Globe theater earlier that day. In any case, I expect to get to the Tate Modern with time to spare. I know that the venue is huge although I have never been there in my previous trips to London because modern art is not my first priority.

Check out Youtube for some previews of the Matisse exhibit. Hope you enjoy it...

My bad, soooo sorry, I misread your query. I guess I have Matisse on the brain!

I loved the Marottan when I went there two years ago. I did not have advanced booking. It was a lovely summer afternoon and we waited about 20 minutes outside because entry was times. It was one of my favorite experiences in Paris. Good luck.

Sue4 and Mary,

Since you are interested in Monet, you will likely visit the ORANGERIE to see the Water Lilies. If so, don't miss their spectacular WALTER-GUILLAUME COLLECTION down stairs.

It contains Impressionist and post-Impressionist works including those of Renoir, Picasso, Modigliani, Cezanne, Matisse, and Rousseau among others. I was particularly taken with the paintings of Andre Derain and Maurice Utrillo.

I really enjoyed the Marottan and the above collection when I was last in Paris. Enjoy...

I'm sure I'll have to wait a little while to get in. I was in Paris when the Monet exhibit was showing, but didn't go as I thought I wouldn't be able to get in. I saw the crowds when I was across the street at the Petit Palais (which I liked, and is free). This exhibit supposedly has some Monet, Renoir, Sisley, Pissaro, etc. works rarely seen, so I'm really looking forward to it.

Four years ago, on a Sunday, I decided to go to the Jacquesmart Andre Museum, and happened upon
an exhibition of Bruegal, van Dyck, and Memling. The line was huge, but I endured it, and it was well worth it.

Latedaytraveler, I'm definitely planning on going to the Orangerie. I went last trip for the first time, and loved it. It was closed for quite a few years for renovation.

My suggestion would be to get there as the doors open, or a bit before or later in the day. Don't go at lunch as all the tours start arriving from 11 am. I made sure I was at the D'Orsay half an hour before opening, was second in line and had the luxury of being first in most rooms, no queuing behind anyone else. Going late in the day means you may be rushing to see everything before they close.

I love the Marmottan, it is one of my favourite museums. Have lunch in the area, heaps of cafes etc around.

As a follow up, I'm back from Paris, and want you Imoressionist lovers to know that this Exhibit is fantastic! I had bought my ticket, and printed it, online before I left, so at least didn't have to stand in line to get in. I arrived around 11:00 (maybe 11:30), and it was crowded, but so well worth it. Wonderful paintings that will be on exhibit only until July something, then back to their private owners. In retrospect, I wish I had bought the book about the paintings on show at their gift shop, but didn't. The Permanent Collection area wasn't crowded, just the Exhibition rooms.

I noticed after I left around 1:30 or so that it wasn't nearly so crowded as earlier. Lunchtime would have been a little better. I also enjoyed, of course, the Orsay and Orangerie. And the Petit Palais. There was an Exhibition going on there (called 1900 Paris) - which I think ALL of Paris must have been standing in line for (everyday!). I missed that one, as the line looked hours long, but it was probably a great exhibition. Parisians don't seem to mind lines, but I do! As for the Louvre, of course I went, and it was mobbed as always, especially the Italian wing. I was there practically all day, and didn't cover too much, Meaning to go back I skipped the Italians, but never did return. Oh, well, I've been before, and I'm sure will be there again, hopefully.

glad you enjoyed it all, Sue. as you say, parisiens [or at least the ones who go to exhibitions] don't seem to mind queuing that much. or crowds!
