where to stay in or around Salzburg?
My husband and I will be traveling by car from Germany and would like to spend three nights in Salzburg. Looking to spend $300 per night, max. Would prefer closer to $200, actually. As far as preferences when we travel, we don't like extremes, in general - no massive hotels but not tiny either; not ultra-modern decor but not super-ornate and old, either. It's our first trip to the area and we'd basically just like a pleasant place that we can drive to and use as our base for exploring the city and the surrounding area. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Here is my favortite place in that area--perfect location to explore the Salzkammergut region---think Sound of Music.

Hi blrn1,
Husband and I will be staying at the Hotel Mozart in Salzburg for a few nights next week. It came highly recommended to us by a friend who stayed there recently. The price was lower than what you're looking for though so may not be to your liking.

Thank you so much for the quick replies!
Bobthenavigator- it's easy, then, to get to & from Salzburg from the Schernthaner? It looks beautiful! (And I'm all about the Sound of Music. Can't wait to do a tour.)

My husband and I stayed here last year and I highly recommend it.

Excellent attached restaurant and very clean and spacious rooms. Easy, short drive into historic Salzburg. It's quite a bit under your budget, but that leaves more money for Sound of Music tours!

If you want to stay IN Salzburg, you should stay in Salzburg. We enjoyed the Wolf Dietrich. It is across the river from oldtown and would be good with a car. It is an easy (and interesting) walk down a pedestrian street and across the bridge into oldtown. Our room overlooked a (convent ?) garden and was very nice. In the afternoon they served coffee and pastry in the lobby.
Then, if you want to go outside of Salzburg, do that. That's what we did and enjoyed the contrast. We enjoyed our stay in St. Gilgen but would not attempt to see Salzburg and get the Salzburg experience from there. Just my opinion! Enjoy your trip!
