Honeymoon in Sicily
Hi everyone!
My soon to be husband and I are planning to go on our honeymoon to Sicily. We will be going on mid-May, staying for 10 days, and we are still not sure where to go. He likes the beach and I like ruins and historical places, which makes Sicily the best destination for us.
We were thinking about renting a car, but we are not sure... people tell us that it's better to rent a car because the public transportation is not good, and never on time, but other people tell us that the roads are bad and difficult to drive.
I was thinking that a good plan would be to flight to Catania, go to Taormina for a few days and then to Syracuse and maybe, if there's time go to Ragusa.
Do you think is doable? Any suggestions?

Yes - you could cover that area in a week. I preferred the other side of the island - Palermo, Agrigento but any place in Sicily will be wonderful.
I would get a rental car for your itinerary. The roads didn't seem bad to me. I was on a bus tour so didn't have a rental car but any roads I saw were in great shape. Other than the major cities (Palermo, Catania) there was little traffic so the driving would be easy.
A car will give you the freedom that public transportation will not. If you're spending a few days in Taormina you will definitely want to do day trips as there's little to do in that town.

I would absolutely rent a car. Busses are unstable in Sicily, at least I felt it was when I was there. Trains were good, but they only run to the biggest towns.
I loved Sicily, so I believe you will have a nice trip!

Rent a car. The roads are good. Your itinerary is doable. You'll have to drive or take a tour to the beaches as Taormina is not directly on the coast.
However, you are missing Agrigento, Selinunte, and Segesta, some of the greatest Greek ruins in the world, as well as lots of beaches on the south coast. Aside from Syracuse, you will not see a lot of history or ruins. As Adrienne suggests, Western Sicily has a lot more history.

Thank you so much guys! I think we will rent a car, i've looked the prices and it seems quite affordable. We have looked pictures from Agrigento, Selinunte and Segesta and we loved it! Thank you so much for the suggestion! We will go there for sure!

I was in Sicily for over 3 weeks exactly a year ago (sigh, wish I was there right now) and rented a car. I was traveling solo, drove all around for 9 days and had no problems at all. Picked up in Trapani and dropped in Ortigia. As mentioned, traffic was light, roads in good shape. Get a GPS and have a detailed map as backup.
You will LOVE Sicily!

With only 10 days, you will have to be selective. There are some wonderful things to be seen!
On the east side, I far preferred Siracusa (Ortygia in particular) to Taormina, although the views from Taormina are stunning. BTW, as I recall, there is a pebbly beach that one can reach by funicular from Taormina -- no need for a car for that.
If you are re-thinking your itinerary, two places that haven't been mentioned that you might want to consider are the cathedral in Monreale -- absolutely breathtaking IMO -- and the Villa Romana del Casale for its incomparable mosaics.
I rented a car for just a few days and relied on public transportation for the rest of my 2 weeks in Sicily. I had no difficulty with the trains or buses, nor did I have any real difficulty with the car. The roads were good. The drivers were NUTS!
Drive defensively!!!
