Any knowledge of the Kavouri - Vouliagmeni (Athens Suburbs) Greece
We may be in Greece May 21 -24 for a short visit. Would like to visit the major tourist sites in Athens but would also like to visit beaches and don't have time to go to the islands. So I have looked at Athens area beaches and am looking at Kavouri-Vouliagmeni suburbs. Are the beaches decent? Are there good restaurants in the area within walking distance? How easy is it to get a taxi (we would rent and apartment) to and from Athens? Also taxi to airport for 6:30 a.m. flight? Any recommendations for private driver?

Will be interested in responses here, or your experience once you go. Were in Athens 40-some yrs. again on part 2 of honeymoon and took bus down the coast to Vouliagmeni beach/cove for an inexpensive beach day. Bought bread, olives, cheese and had them for picnic lunch on the rocks -- swam in the beautiful water. There was a little cart by the bus-stop that sold sodas and hats. I'm sure it's all hugely changed since then, but an idyllic memory.

Just Google-mapped the area and believe we were beyond Vougliagmeni in the area of what they label Limonakia (Athens area, not Samos or other island - a lot of places have "Lemon" beaches) beach/bar -- based on the photos that Google pulled up. Doesn't look all that different there from my memory.
Here's a link to the map -- zoom in and click to get photos if you can. http://tinyurl.com/limonaki
As for your questions -- there are apparently places to stay back up the highway, and perhaps others have sought out cafes, etc. there.

Vouliagmeni has 2 popular sandy beaches (with sunbeds, umbrellas, showers, toilets, restaurants etc.). Kavouri is the more natural of both.
I like the beach of Varkiza, however (a few bus stations more outside).
Be aware that there are very quiet and very noisy streets in this area; if you are very close to Kavouri beach, you will be fine (the main street would be the hell, however).
Transport to Athens:
bus to metro terminal Elliniko or to tram terminal Asklipio Voulas. The tram stop is much closer, but the metro is much faster.
I suppose the owner of the flat you rent will be able to book at taxi for 4am.

I live in Athens, and we Athenians consider Vouliagmeni as the Top beach destination in Attica, so yes Vouliagmeni is a pretty good choice. The best beaches are the "Limanakia" and "Asteras" of Vouliagmeni. Some good restaurants are: "Matsuhisa Athens Nobu" a Japanese Top Notch restaurant of the World Famous Chef Matsuhisa which has restaurants in all the "chic" destinations in the World like Hong Kong London and New York. It is next to the Asteras beach, the food is an exceptional mix of Japanese and Greek cuisines, but it is very expensive 65-82€ per person. Another restaurant is "Ιθάκη" (Ithaki) which is a Top Notch Greek Fusion Seafood restaurant, the food and the view is fantastic but it is expensive 68-84€ per person. Another restaurant is "Λάμπρος" (Lambros) a more traditional Greek Restaurant with very good quality Fish, and the prices are good 30€ per person.

Kavouri is part of Vouliagmeni, and one of the two most expensive areas of Athens.
The nicest beach belongs to the Westin Hotel, a complex of 3 Hotels, and has a salty entrance.
There are public beaches in Kavouri and yes they are decent.
( although decent is a matter of definition)
There are restaurants too, not sure they will be in walking distance, ths depends on where exactly you will stay.
Finding a taxi might not be very easy, you would have to go to one of the main roads or call for a taxi from your apartment.
Finding a taxi at 4:30 in the morning won't be very easy either, you would have to book a taxi to make sure you will be on time at the aiport.
Unfortunately the X 96, express bus to the airport does not pass through Vouliagmeni.....
Your stay will be too short and you will be losing time to get to Athens, maybe it would be a better idea to stay in the center of Athens with endless restaurants etc nearby, and all major mueums and sites in walking distance.
You also asked for a private dinner, can you be a little more specific on what you mean with that?

Oh so sorry.. i 've read private dinner instead of driver
There are two types of cars with a driver that you can have in Athens.
1. a limo with driver ( extremely expensive)
2. a taxi
Anything else is not allowed by greek law and would be illegal.
Being Athenian i have never used a car with driver, but i am sure others here can give you names of taxi drivers that they have used.
Just keep in mind that drivers are not tour guides ( tour guides have an official licence) and they cannot visit any archaeological sites or museums with you.
