Europe's Best Second Cities

Hi Europe Travelers!

We recently posted a slideshow that highlights Europe's best second cities. These lesser-known cities remain under the radar for most travelers—but offer distinctive cultures and histories that are worth experiencing firsthand. These cities prove that “second” doesn’t always mean “second best.”

Take a look and let us know what you think!

Maybe calling "Interesting but often overlooked" would be better.

What is number one in Spain Madrid or Barcelona? And there are many contenders for most overlooked.

Same with Italy after Rome there are many contenders.

The same is true with most of those countries. Eschew the hyperbole and let the cities speak for themselves.

It's politically correct to call it Derry Londonderry as the name you have selected sits on only one side of the political divide.

The pictures, at least, make them all sound like great destinations! I'm headed for Zagreb (ancestral home) next year!

I kind of thought it was funny that Frankfurt, which always makes it to the top 10 best places in the world to live (usually tied with Munich) and is also an Alpha city, is considered a "Second City". Frankfurt lists higher than Berlin, Munich, Hamburg, and Dusseldorf.

It is too often underrated as an interesting, historic German city. I think a lot of guide books were originally written in the 60's and 70's when it probably wasn't much of a tourist attraction, since it was filled with American soldiers, and no guidebook editor has considered redoing what they have written about it.

Come visit us again Fodors and update the Frankfurt tourist attractions which frankly, are rather sparse and not very accurate.

I agree with the comment from bilboburger, you should say Derry and Londonderry.
My comments about Antwerp.
The Diamantwijk "Diamond area" is very run down and has nothing to see except the what is in the shop windows.
Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekathedraal entrance fee is now 6€ each.
The city can smell at times, of sewage. In fact one can visit the old sewers! Most museums are closed on Monday.
A restaurant you missed off your list is De Sinjoor meal for 2 with wine and beer cost us 46€ so quite expensive. But friendly service and good food.
