Car Service in Manhattan

We want to use a car service to get from Newark Airport to our Manhattan hotel after an international flight. Any recommendations from personal experience?
We've considered other transportation options (train/shuttle /taxi) but a car service fits our needs.

I know but they didn't get good reviews on Yelp. Maybe someone has another service to recommend.

Carey Limousine Service is very good but expensive: www.carey.com/Carey/cities/US/NewYork/

We've also used Empire Car service with good results: www.empire-carservice.com

I have used them both and for the most part they are fine.

If you take a NYC cab:
Newark International Airport
-The set fare from New York City to Newark International Airport is the regular metered rate of fare, plus a $17.50 surcharge, plus all tolls going to and returning from the airport.

Thanks for the info about the taxi. I'll check the other car services.
Anyone actually used Carmel or Dial 7 recently?

No, absolutely do not take a taxi, which will be significantly more expensive than any other form of transportation. You really have to take a car service; that's the only thing that makes sense.

I use Dial 7 almost exclusively (I used Dial 7 last month to get to JFK from my apartment), and I've never had a problem with their service, but I realize it's a big company and uses a huge number of drivers, some of whom are better than others.

I suggest you ask your hotel for a recommendation. I have always done that, which is why I don't remember the name of any specific service, and it's always worked out well. Good luck!

I also read that a taxi could be very expensive. Glad to read that someone has had a good experience with Dial 7.

Have used both regularly for years and have had only one problem (some idiot wanted me to pay tolls BOTH way because he wasn;t starting out in Queens). I just refused and when he complained called the office - who set him right. But that is out of dozens of rides.

Not sure what complaints you are seeing on Yelp. I know some people are unhappy because they are expecting an upscale limo service instead of a basic car service. In fact, as far as I have seen they provide the type of service paid for.

If you want a real limousine service with uniform driver, free beverages, "meet and greet" service etc - there are plenty of companies that provide it - but at a significantly higher price.

Yes, I use them, as I live in Manhattan and used Carmel just a few weeks ago to LGA and used 7's to Newark in December.

They are car services, not thoracic surgeons, I am not sure what the deep fear is here.

I have used dial 7 and my DD uses them all the time. No problems. Yelpers probably didn't like the color of the interior.

We used Dial 7 twice last May from and back to Newark. We called them when we got our luggage and they were there within 10 minutes to pick us up. On the way back to Newark, we had a very early, 4AM, pickup time in Long Island City and had to pick up another person on the Upper Eastside and then to Newark. The car showed up on time and got us all to the airport fine. At Christmas time we used them again to take us back to Newark from Midtown East area, again very early. The driver was early and got us to the airport fine. For the airport pickup we reserved the car but did not have to pay until we were dropped off.

I only Yelp from their restaurant reviews and half the people do not know of which they speak. Many think they have to be critical to be cool.

For trips between Newark Airport and Manhattan, a taxi will always be more expensive. Why? Because the ride crosses the state border between New York and New Jersey.

By law, a licensed New York taxi can take passengers from Manhattan to Newark, but is not allowed to pick up passengers at Newark.

By law, a licensed New Jersey taxi can take passengers from Newark to Manhattan, but is not allowed to pick up passengers in Manhattan.

Therefore, the taxis are allowed to add additional fees and tolls to cover the empty ride back to their state.

These laws do not apply to car services which operate under a different category and can cross state lines.

I like town cars from Carmel Limo.

Either Carmel or Dial 7 will be a good choice.

I've used Dial 7 twice in the last 6 months (one just last week) and found the service just fine.

I prefer booking a car service instead of waiting for a cab or shared airport shuttles. What's good thing about it is that your car waits for as soon as you jump of your plane plus a chauffeur who's willing to assist you with your luggage. You don't have to wait for available cab.
