Budget Hotel or B&B Luzern

As my travel planning for this September goes forward, I am considering 3 nights in Luzern following a 7-night stay in a vacation apartment in Solothurn, before departing from Zurich. I have been to Luzern at least 4 times on daytrips, but being there through the night appeals to me this year. After splurging on the FeWo, I do not want to pay more than ~$140 per night (or less, for a clean bed) in a single room (must have own WC/Shower).
I am travelling solo, by train, so must be walkable to Hauptbahnhof as well.
So far, my top choices seem to be Hotel Apina at 417 CHF/3 nights or a pricier Hotel des Alpes for an Einzelzimmer mit Flussblick (single room with river view) for 480 CHF.
Any other suggestions?

https://www.airbnb.com/ - just in case you by some chance are not familiar with this room renting service in folks houses.

I have stayed at Hotel Royal.

However, it is near the Palace Hotel and Hotel Montana. You cross the street at Palace and walk uphill for about 5 minutes.

The view of the lake is unbelievable, but it is a steep walk to get to the hotel.

I walked from the hotel to Luzern Bahnhof; it took 20 minutes.

Another hotel is the Beau Sejour au Lac.

It, too, is near the Palace Hotel.

I don't like staying near the Bahnhof. You can hear the trains at night.

Here's my TA review of the Hotel des Alpes, which is easily walkable from the hauptbahnhof.

I spent one night in a single room at the Hotel des Alpes in June and thought the location perfect. I adored the views from my room over the river and bridges! The room itself was nothing special, but was perfectly adequate. The staff seemed busy, but were helpful and efficient and responsive nonetheless. The breakfast room held a nice array of tasty foods and offered a very pleasant view of the Kapellbrucke and swans.

Blimey, I guess my suggestions went over as well as a turd sitting on the head of the Archbishop of Canterbury.

Maybe you are posh and shop at Bucherer instead of Coop.

Thanks kja for your helpful response. That's what I was looking for, personal experience.
FWIW, I found 1) HomeRental Apthaus Winkelried @ $378/3 nights
2) Ibis Budget Hotel Luzern City @ $364/3 nts
3) Hotel Alpina @ $478/3 nts AND 4) Tourist Hotel @$430/3 nts. You see, not everyone breathes the rarified air of Hotel Royal or Palace Hotel...

I just looked at the rates for Hotel Royal.

You can get a single without view of lake for $446--3 night stay.

So, that puts it in the running with the other hotels you listed in your post above.

Don't understand the Palace Hotel comment. I never recommended it...I wrote that you CROSS the street at the Palace Hotel.

Maybe English is your second language???

Good luck!

Enjoy Switzerland!

Tschuss,

My friend and I stayed at the Hotel Alpha last September. It was on a quiet street, an easy walk from the bahnhof. We did not have a private bathroom, but were directly across from the shared one. We were there 2 nights and I don't think we ever saw anyone else in there. The room was clean and comfortable and the breakfast buffet was good. We paid 118 SF for the double.

Thanks nana, I DID see that hotel, and considered it. Did it have a sink with running water in the room at least?

We can recommend the Hotel Goldener-Stern. It's about ten minutes flat walk from the railway station along the river. Rooms have an en-suite bathroom and are basic and clean. Breakfast was good and staff were friendly.
