I'm doing a group tour in Nepal/Tibet later this year, and will have some free time both in Kathmandu and Lhasa before and after my trip.

I was hoping someone could recommend a good day-guide. I did a shopping tour in Delhi one day, as well as a food tour and truly enjoyed both.
Has anyone done a tour like this - a specialty tour- in Kathmandu or Lhasa that they could recommend?

I've been to Kathmandu twice, and it is very easy to of on your own. I'd suggest you decide what you want to see - there is a full weeks of sight-seeing at World Heritage sites in the Valley. Look at what your tour offers you, then choose what else you want to see. It is easy to take taxis from place to place, but you can hire a car and driver for the day. There are official guides at all of the sites, and you can hire them for about $5.

You should check with your group tour organizer to see if you're allowed to stay on in Lhasa after the group tour is over. Even with a group tour, you'll have some free time and you could take a cooking class through Tibetan Family Kitchen. I didn't take a class but had tea and dinner there: the food was great. You can also wander around on your own in the Barkhor (plenty of shopping opportunities)

Officially, tourists visiting Tibet with a Tibet Travel Bureau permit must be accompanied with a guide provided by the travel agent who got that permit for you.

I've seen westerners wandering around Lhasa on their own, of course. The usual question is how to LOSE your guide, not where to get one.

Yes, my tour starts and ends in Kathmandu, but while in Lhasa I will have some free time!

I do enjoy exploring new places, but to keep my parents happy (I'm 23, but an only child!) I've promised that on any trips I take abroad (except for Europe) I will not wander around on my own, but will use tour guides
I'm excited for when my SO finishes school and we can travel together so I can ditch the guides!
