Please help with cruise planning.
Want to stay extra day prior to cruise in Venice and extra 2days after cruise in Barcelona. Please help out with planning not sure about luggage and ability to get to cruise ship easily.

When we cruised from Venice a few years ago, we stayed overnight on our ship. We had a short day the first day and until about four PM the second day. If you can't do that, your Travel Agent or the cruise line should be able to arrange a hotel for you. It will be expensive. You can explore Venice on your own. One of the great things about Venice is to just start walking and see what happens.
Access from the port to the main vaporetto station was a challenge when we were there, but look into it.
Barcelona is great. We stayed at the AC Diplomatic Hotel which was very nice and located well. We hired a car and driver for a half day and it was great. Investigate thw web for names of companies and double check here or on cruise critic for reputation. There is plenty to do in Barcelona. Leave plenty of time at the airport as check in is slow and chaotic.

In Barcelona, we liked the Hotel Lleo--very conveniently located, moderately priced, large rooms with modern bathrooms, lovely front desk staff.
We did our sightseeing on our own, and particularly liked the Gaudi sites: Casa Batllo, Casa Mila, Parc Guell, La Sagrada Familia.

We cabbed it from the dock to the hotel in Bar. It was easy and not too long as I recall. When we were there in 2002 they had two hop on/hop off bus routes which went to the major sites as abram mentioned. I suppose they still have it now and its super easy. There was a north and a south route IIRC and the buses leave from the square in the Ramblas where you find a lot of hotels. Our hotel was the Avenida palace which was w/i an easy walk to the square.

We stayed at a hotel near airport and took bus into Venice (Piazza Roma). The bus will also stop by the port port entrance and you can walk in (a fair distance) or take "people mover" to cruise terminal from Piazza Roma (which is the main bus terminal by the train terminal).
Hotel within the island city of Venice are older and you have to navigate the narrow streets and bridges (steps) with your luggage to get to the hotel which could be a challenge depending on the hotel and location, and how many pieces you have. That's why we decided to stay outside of Venice and took bus in daily.
Venice is a small place and we walked everywhere. You won;t get lost as long as you have a map and note the landmarks and squares rather than street names. The squares and parks are clearly marked on the maps and is easier to find than street names.

We stayed in the Hotel Ca Doge, Venice. It is just across the road from the people mover that takes you out to the cruise terminals.
It didn't look much from the outside, but inside was charming, and had comfortable beds and beautifully clean bathrooms.
That area is really a transport interchange, but the hotel owner pointed us to an area just around the corner that is used by locals rather than tourists, where we ate dinner.
It's an easy walk across the bridge into the main parts of Venice. Di

There is no doubt that Barcelona is one of our favorite cities. Thanks to cruisers on t his site we have found a great hotel right on La Ramblas, The Continental.It is a popular hotel use by cruisers, a friendly staff, great location, free refreshments and internet services 24/7. On top of that my friends here introduced me to Aurielo <[email protected]>. He is an english speaking guide/driver (raised outside of NYC) who will pick you up at the port, bring up your luggage and take you on a fabulous tour of Barcelona and then when your ready to go back to the airport take you back..We have seen more of Barcelona with Aurielo in one day than we could in several days,so that when we had time we could revisit our favorite spots. We loved the old market in Barcelona and just even walking La Ramblas
