Itinerary help driving Lyon to Barcelona then to Cinque Terra
Hi all
We are picking up a lease car in Lyon mid May and have a week to get to Barcelona where we have 3 days then we have 3 days to CT.
We would love some ideas on routes fodorites would take.

I didn't realise ferries go there but there are no ferries on our checkout date and we want to drive. Thinking of having a long day ( 2 drivers) staying Aix en Provence or Cassis 2 nights then over night Nice and on to CT. Any suggestions, it depends on how we go from Lyon to Barcelona (Provence or Languedoc?)

Well if you've never been to Provence then check out Avignon, Arles, the Pont due Gard, Les Baux - St-Remy all wonderful places in a compact area easily reach by short drives from any base - many love St Remy but I prefer Arles or Avignon.

Hi Rosie. I see that no-one has offered anything for the longer part of your drive ie Lyon to Barcelona. I cannot offer anything for the Spanish part.
After leaving lyon, I would suggest going through Le Puy en Velay. It is an impressive place with volcanic plugs. There is a very old chapel on top of one and worth the walk to the top.
After this you could go through Mende, join the AutoRoute and go via the Millau viaduct down to the coast and on into Spain. But you will travel this on your way back [ the coast I mean ]. Probably depends on how much you want to see and drive over the Millau bridge.[ We have yet to do this. Planned for our trip this year ]
With a week , I would suggest going on to Rodez [ the Plus Beaux village of Conques in the Aveyron is gorgeous ], down through Albi and into the Aude region. Have you been to Carcassonne? Lovely from a distance. The Cathar castles are quite amazing. We visited Peyrepertuse and Queribus in 2012 and standing at the top of Peyrepertuse was one of the memorable moments of our trip.
It is then easy to get to the autoroute that goes into Spain.
We spent a week in each of these regions in 2012 - Haute Loire from where we visited Le Puy, the Aveyron, and the Aude. Here is my report [ weeks 2, 3 and 4 ].

The wines of the Corbieres are great, as is Blanquette de Limoux. Not hard to spend a week travelling this region. The area inland from Perpignan is also lovely. We spent a week in the village of Eus in 2008 and enjoyed the area. Some beautiful abbeys and priories and Plus Beaux Villages.

I presume you have http://www.viamichelin.com/ which is good for planning. Just add some time for stops and delays.
With some research you could have a great week getting to Barcelona.

Wow, that's a lot of expensive driving!
As you travel the coast in Liguria you can take a break to see some nice villages just off the autostrada, such as Apricale, Cervo, Finalborgo, Noli. This article describes three and has links to a map and other articles in the series:

Don't join the autoroute! Follow the road down to Ste Enimie
and get to Millau via the Gorges du Tarn. You'll love it.
Rhon is right about Le Puy and the volcanic plugs. But 'plugs' doesn't sound very interesting... they are more like soaring volcanic spires! Unique. If you overnight there I recommend the Hotel du Parc.
