Hotel or Bed and Breakfast in Interlaken

Thanks to wonderful input from Forum participants, I have decided to stay in Interlaken during my visit from May 28th-June 3rd. I need help choosing either a moderately priced hotel, or Bed and Breakfast.

I don't want a luxury hotel. However, since I'll be there for 6 nights, I want a decent place to stay. I figure I will need to spend approximately $150-$225 per night, and that is in my budget.

My main criteria is good proximity to train stations, since I will be taking day trips, and a decent sized room, as I will be sharing the room with my 21 year old daughter.

If there is a bed and breakfast which would cost approximately $100 per room, that would still be in my budget, and allow my daughter and I to have our own room.

Thank you so much for all of your help and guidance.

Interlaken?

Why would anyone want to stay in Interlaken when they could stay in Wengen, Lauterbrunnen, or Murren?

However, the Hotel du Lac in Interlaken is right next door to Interlaken Ost and the Lake Brienz boat launch.

It is too bad you can't afford Beau Rivage or the extremely snooty Hotel Victoria.

I do hope that you will take the choo-choo up to the Schynige Platte. You take the train from Interlaken Ost to Wilderswil then get off to transfer.

Thin, dreaming of Wengen

Yes, this seems strange garyincary. On your other thread, three people recommended Lauterbrunnen, and one recommended Interlaken.

So it seems strange that, due to Forum participants' input, you chose Interlaken. . .

I have spent time in Interlaken a couple of times and I think it is a good base for touring the area. I think Interlaken is a good idea for the OP. There are plenty of hotel/dining/shopping options within walking distance of most hotels. The Beau Rivage is indeed a lovely hotel, but out of reach. We also stayed at a Best Western that was near the east train station. The BW was not such an easy walking distance to restaurants and shops, but the room was less expensive and it had a nice Swiss "feel" to it, complete with the sound of cow bells when we sat on our small balcony with morning coffee.

How is Interlaken a better base than Lauterbrunnen when it is only 20 minutes away by train?

One of the best walks in all of the BO is from Mannlichen to Kleine Scheidegg. Easier to
do from Wengen than Interlaken.

I would rather a quiet charming car-free town than Interlaken with its Casino and Hooters.

Thin, who has been to Thun

Interlaken CAN be a better base if the person is staying several days and also is interested in day trips on the lakes and/or to Bern or Thun. There is more to Switzerland than JUST the mountains. We spent five nights in Inerlaken and used the best days weather wise to go up to the mountains and the other days to go to Bern/Murten and Thun.

We stayed at Suzie's B&B which is a part of Lotschberg Hotel. Our room had a kitchenette which allowed us to save on food by making our dinner a few nights and making picnics to take with us. Breakfast was at the hotel . The owner was very helpful with telling everyone at breakfast what the weather that day was like in various locations and making suggestions for what to do. It was very close to the train station.

I too am wondering who advised you to stay in Interlaken. You say, 'forum participants'. What forum?

Six nights in Interlaken would be something that you find in a nightmare.

Here's the thing garyincary, Interlaken is where a lot of tourists do stay. It is also where most people with much experience of travel in Switzerland would be least likely to suggest you stay. Received wisdom by those who know Switzerland would suggest you stay in any of the nearby villages instead.

To put it bluntly, from my perspective, anyone who suggests you stay in Interlaken should be avoided at all cost when it comes to taking advice.

Replies like that are a good reason why one should read many different perspectives and make up your own mind. How arrogant to think your way is the only way! And that other people's advice should be ignored. Lots of times I've received advice from many people on a specific question and sometimes it's the majority perspective that turns out to be 'right' and sometimes it's the minority.

I stand by my advice that, depending on what you want to see and do in Switzerland, basing in Interlaken can be a very good choice. It's pretty easy to determine that it lacks the charm of one of the small towns but people have numerous considerations they take into account when deciding where to base.

To put it bluntly, from my perspective, anyone who suggests you do something just cause that's what they would do should be avoided at all cost when it comes to taking advice.

A most beautiful venue smack on the River Aare is Hotel Goldy Swiss. We felt it was a great choice, and walked easily (15 minutes) to Ost Station along the pictureque promenande each day for a train into the mountains. There is nothing on that side of the river, and it's a ten minute walk over a footbridge to downtown Interlaken. Superb breakfast buffet.

Get rooms with balcony for great views of the alps and the river. If Interlaken becomes your final choice, I stand by Interlaken and the Hotel Goldy Swiss...but as Isabel states, where to stay is your choice all the way.(For two rooms, it could be beyond your budget)

A fine pic of the Goldey Swiss, backed up against a mountainside, with the River Aare as the front yard. I'm not trying to oversell, but you asked for hotel recs..andI've given you mine...a unique lodging.

Lol this thread just goes to show the retarded ignorance of the users here.

Somone says they are staying in interlaken and looking for suggestions, follow up with 5 posts about doing somthing different, than follow up a post saying interlaken is a decent place to stay by people attacking an opinion

Never been on a forum with such arrogance or ignorance than here. When Somone asks a question or looks for suggestions how about help or avoid the thread rather than tell Somone they are wrong or what to do.

We will he staying in interlaken in May as well on suggestion from others I personally know who have been. For a shorter 4 day stay it suited us far better as we can quickly get in and out of the city where if we stayed in the mountains etc that would add fairly substantial time to our trip back to Paris

Well, fwiw, if I wanted a base that was convenient for moving around and excursions to the mountains as well as to other places in the Oberland, I would choose Thun or Spiez, not Interlaken.

Unlike Interlaken, Thun sits right on a lake, is charming, has a castle in town, has interesting arcaded shopping streets, and is totally overlooked by most tourists (and all tour busses).

Spiez also has a small castle in town, a lovely flower-decked harbor, a small patch of vineyards, and it sits right on a lake. Spiez is also wonderfully located for excursions as far as to Gstaad, Gruyeres, and Broc.

Why would anyone want to go to Torquay?>

(A simple one sentence answer to a poster who just wanted information on a hotel in Torquay).

Check out Alphorn Bed and Breakfast at www.hotel-alphorn.ch. We stayed there in June 2013. The rooms were small, as compared to American standards, but clean. And the breakfast was wonderful. Christine was helpful with dinner suggestions and area activities, too.

And don't let the Interlaken/Mountain location conversation bother you. Obviously, we chose to stay in Interlaken versus the mountains. My husband and I were travelling with our two teenage sons and staying in a picturesque, mountain village was not high on their list. They would have rather been in a more populated area with more "action". We live in the Ozarks, so picturesque, is ALL around us! OTOH, if DH and I were travelling alone, we would have stayed in the mountains, probably Lauterbrunnen. But this trip was about our kids, not us. So pick what works best for You and your daughter!

Have you checked out airbnb.com? My hub and I are staying in a chalet in Murren this June. Decent price with extra room as well as a kitchen!

I realize that Thin/Thun. It's between the mountains. Kinda like Interlaken is between the lakes. My point is--- do your research and stay where the environment best suits your travel group.
