Road/Bike trip of U.S.

Hi,

I am interested in taking a 4-6 week trip across the U.S. leaving from Boston, this summer. I have been attempting to brain storm and am presently stumped. If anyone has an idea of a fun trip please share!

I was hoping to only drive for about 6-8 hours a day and am open to pretty much anything.

I enjoy Hiking, golfing, museums, baseball games, parks, anything outdoors.

If anyone has any great trips in a car or great trails on a bicycle please pass them along!

I am leaving from Boston and looking at late June for my departure!

Thanks.

Nice hiking and biking trails near DC around Great Falls, the C&O Canal and the Potomac River.
Good Kayaking in the Chesapeake near Baltimore, Great Falls near DC and in Richmond,VA on the James River.

A good friend of mine did a bike trip in the mid-western states in June a few years ago. He rode is bike to lots of minor league baseball games. He often finds those more enjoyable than the big leagues.

He also visited several Civil War sites, Shiloh was perhaps his favorite.

He also road the Katy Trail, says it is worth doing again:

When I travel I look up local bike shops and ask them about trails or routes. Every bike shop I've ever contacted has been happy to help out with recommendations.

One of my co-workers did a cross country bike trip as part of a fund raising program for a medical charity. He is a very serious rider and has been for at least 10 years with all of the best equipment. And the charity organized in advance places for him to stay/support stations along the way.

It took him more than 2 months. Not sure how far you are going to get in 6 weeks - and how are you planning on getting back?

I don't think the OP was actually planning to ride across the whole country on his bike. Seemed like a combination road/bike trip, but not a whole lot of details given.

It also took me 2+ months to ride from New York City to San Francisco many years ago (1972), via a 4,200 mile route. My friend and I were so dumb we didn't fully realize the implication of the prevailing westerly wind. But we were in NYC and wanted to get to SF, so no way around that issue...
