Best way to get from Milan to Vienna or Salsburg

Best way to get from Milan to Vienna or Salsburg
My 22 year old son and I will be traveling Europe for 3 weeks. At one point we will be spending a day/night in Milan with a friend. From there we thought we should go to Austria for a day or two before spending our last week in Italy. Wondering how long it takes by train to Vienna or Salsburg? Also, if we can only do one, which would you recommend to visit, Vienna or Salsburg?

Vienna is in a very eastern position in respect to Milan. As Marshall Metternich once said, "Asia begins at Landstrasse". A train trip is something like 11-13 hours with multiple changes, in some combinations even a bus leg. Flying is the way.
Salzburg is a bit easier by train, only 9 hours or so again with multiple changes. Flying is not an option as there are no direct services. Munich airport is close, but still two or three hours from Salzburg.

You can find trains schedules on your own. www.bahn.com, enter Milano Centrale-Salzburg hbf, etc. No need to have someone do it for you. They offer different things. Both offer a long list of attractions depending on your taste.

There is much more to see in Vienna than at Salzburg. A somewhat decent visit of Vienna takes AT LEAST 3 days.
There are tons of other gems along the Milan - Vienna itinerary, of course!
Niki flies about 3times daily from Milan to Vienna (fares start at 100 EUR/OW); count about 6 hrs from city center to city center.
There are also night trains between Venice and Vienna.

Are you going to Venice? Because if so it might make more sense to put Austria at the end of your trip after Venice. The train ride through the Brenner Pass north of Venice is very scenic. I haven't been to Salzburg but love Vienna - I've spent a total of two weeks there and would happily go back.

If you've just got a day or two, consider taking a trip up to Lake Como or Lugano area. It's maybe an hour via train north of Milan.
Though Austria is not far by the way a crow flies, getting over the mountains from Milan is very difficult and not worth it for such a short time.
