week exploring the florida keys

Planning on flying into Miami- then driving to Key Largo or may another key-and finally ending up at Key West.
have six nights to spend, would like recommendations on where to stay a night or two on the way to break up the drive and see the other keys. Interested in scenery, kayaking, snorkeling, interesting dining. Couple in our 60's, like people watching, beaches, but not late nights.
Thanks.

It really depends on your budget and the time of year (as prices go up in high season!)

DH and I had a great trip to Kew West 2 years ago. We drove from FT Lauderdale right down to Key West. We loved Key West - stayed at the Casa Marina which is a beautiful property. Did a fishing charter one morning, toured the customshouse art museum and just loved walking around. Nights we would stroll up and down Duvall St and listen to the live music that spills out from the bars.

In retrospect, we should have meandered more and taken time to walk out on the railroad bridge that you see along way. We did stop at the Bahia Honda state park on the way back but didn't leave enough time to really enjoy it. Didn't see Pennekamp St Park either. I think you would really enjoy both of those parks.

Make your hotel plans in Key West ASAP...many places have 3 night minimums...Try Casa 325 B & B...centrally located and they have some reasonable priced rooms. Your dates are near Easter..I would make all hotel plans NOW.

We just had a great trip to Key West and loved the Ocean Key Resort; we got an off season deal. We enjoyed snorkeling with Sebago, doing a Wind and Wine Sail with Danger Charters, and taking a trip to the Dry Tortugas. Also really enjoyed the tour of the Hemingway House - interesting and more fun that you would expect. One the way down we stopped at Robbie's to feed the tarpon. Key West has some great restaurants - Latitudes and Louie's Backyard have really beautiful views. We also enjoyed eating at Sunset Pier and Hot Tin Roof.

My suggestion - fly in Ft Lauderdale. The airport, and especially the car rental set up, is far, far better than Miami. You should stop in Marathon for a day. Once pass Marathon, there is almost nothing till you hit K West.

https://www.facebook.com/SunriseCuban, Tavernier is a great stop for real Cuban food and bread fresh out of the oven.
Rain Barrel Artisan Village, Islamorada is worth a stop. That is it for us, straight to Key West. You can feed the Tarpon before Happy Hour at Alonzos in KW. They are huge there when the fishing boats come in they are ready to eat.
