I'd like to stock up on fresh island fruits and veg on our way to our condo in Wailea. I have read that Costco on Maui has great fresh produce (and really good, fresh poke). It has also been suggested that Cash and Carry would be a good place to pick up local produce. Kumu Farms at the Maui Tropical Plantation has also been mentioned as a good place to pick up fresh produce.

We arrive on a Thursday and the farmer's markets in Kihei aren't until Saturday and would prefer not to wait until then.

Do you have any recent experiences with the Costco ON Maui, the Cash and Carry or Kumu Farms?

I shop at Costco all the time at home, so I know what I am in for. Apparently, the one on Maui has a lot of items unique to Hawaii, which intrigues me

Whenever I arrive on Maui I stock up at costco. It is the same as the costcos on the mainland. The prices are a little higher on some items but cheaper than most local stores on Maui. The produce is very good, mostly the same as you get back home. Farmers markets are the best though for quality, freshness, and locally grown. Also Safeways on Maui have very good prices on the items they have on sale. The store that consistently gets the award for best poke is Foodland. About a mile from Costco is an excellent Whole Foods at which I supplement my haul from Costco. We have often found that it can be cheaper to eat out where the locals eat, than to shop and cook for yourself. Maui Tacos is one of these but their are many others.

We usually arrive late, and I have my grocery list ready for a quick stop at Safeway enroute to our South Kihei condo. I get something for a late bite and for the next morning's breakfast. I only shop Costco's big volume if we're here for longer than a week. The Safeway is right off Piilani Hwy at Piikea (stoplight); you'll see a sign for Hilo Hattie and Ruby Tuesday. (If you continue down Piikea, there's a Long's (CVS) Drugs right before Kiihei Rd. South on Kihei Road is Foodland, near a firehouse.) We get right back on Piilani -- five minutes to Kilohana stoplight and firehouse), then down to Kihei Rd. (We backtrack a little to Maui Kamaole. You'd go south into Wailea. You can also just continue on Piilani and turn down to the coast later within Wailea.)

Costco is *an experience* -- VERY busy. Yes, they do have some Hawaiian-themed items, and fresh fish and poke. And, of course, the *chickens*! LOL

You might try Monkeypod Kitchen and Joe's (Joe Gannon) in the little center above Wailea. Shops At Wailea has a couple restaurant choices that are "OK". Wednesday there is live entertainment at Shops. I like Gannon's on a golf course 'way above Wailea -- food is OK but the view is wonderful -- serve B,L,D. Five Palms in the Mana Kai condo sits right on Keawakapu beach, OK food, pretty venue, also B,L,D. Each of the hotels in Wailea has at least one good restaurant -- more expensive than my earlier suggestions.

Thanks ChiSue. We'll probably pick up some things at Safeway on the way in and then do the Farmer's Market in town on Saturday.

Regarding Gannons...Is it a casual place or is it more dressy?

We were shopping for stuff for the condo today in Kahului. I confirmed that it is 14 miles from the airport to Wailea -- mostly at 45 MPH on four-lane highway. Takes us 20 minutes.

Oh, you might like the various fish dishes at Coconut's in the Azeka Place mall, across Piikea Rd. from Long's at Kihei Rd. DH and I can split an order of Local Style (Mahi-mahi, Ono, whatever ) on brown rice. There is a Maui Coffee shop there too, and Stella Blue's (entertainment some nights). Re: Entertainment. Mulligan's on the Blue in Wailea has an Irish group and sometimes Willie K. (Go see him if you can.)

ChiSue -- "Dressy" on Hawaii to me is a collared shirt, shorts, and my Donald Pliner sandals. I guess that would work at Gannons?

We have eaten at Coconuts and like it.
