Lost camera in Paris

I left my camera in the backseat of a Paris cab this afternoon. Does anyone happen to know of a central number I can call to inquire if it was found? Or is it just a lost cause? I'm so mad at myself! Thanks for any help.

It's probably a lost cause.

File a police report and then a claim with your insurance company.

Be more diligent next time.

Bummer! If you are staying at a hotel, you might ask the concierge to make enquiries for you.

FWIW, danal, I remove my camera's card after a major shoot. That way, if my camera is lost or stolen, I at least have the pics.

Too bad there isn't a single taxi company in Paris.

If you ordered the taxi, then you should be able to locate the driver. There are several services that service the airport including: www.taxisg7.com, www.alphataxis.fr and www.taxis-bleus.com. Email them and ask if one of their driver found it.

Unless the camera is one of the larger Digital SLRs (Nikon, Canon, etc.), it would have very little value to anyone who found it.

All taxis are licensed and managed by the local Police. There is normally a police webpage dedicated just for the purpose of finding items left in taxis but the link appears to have recently broken. None the less, here is where you start:

https://mdel.mon.service-public.fr/d...ts-perdus.html

This is the link, found in the middle of the above web page, that no longer appears to work:

http://www.prefecturedepolice.interi...perdu-un-objet

If you want to try to get your camera back, contact the local police Préfecture tomorrow morning, try to remember as many details about your taxi as you can. and start an inquiry.

If you happened to use a credit card to pay for your taxi, that would help in identifying the cab. Otherwise just remember what you can and go to the nearest Préfecture for assistance.

Good luck.

If you do not know the name of the taxi company, you can enquire at the central lost-and-found office for Paris (link above) after two weeks.

There was a web story about a camera reunited with its owners by someone posting the pictures on line. Maybe it was even on this Fodors website. (That's where I get all my travel info.)

A quick google didn't find the story but I did find that facebook has a segment dedicated to it and there is even a website www.camerafound.com where you can post to see if someone found it.

It seems worth a try.

Good luck! And a tip for anyone who reads this thread: Always make the first picture on each memory card, and your camera's internal memory if it has any, a picture of a message saying how to reach you if the camera or memory card is found.

Kja is right. I made the notice on my computer and I then take a picture of the screen as the first picture on each memory card. I also include a statement that there is a reward for return.

My plan, not stated in the notice, is to have the card returned and let the finder keep the camera, which is not all that expensive and could use an upgrade. Maybe I should include that offer, as well as a translation into the local language of my next destination.

That's an excellent idea kja!

Don't give up hope. Even if you don't get the camera back, someone may be happy to get the memory card back.

I can't take credit -- I think I learned it here on Fodor's.

Just to give you hope-I left my work laptop in a cab coming home in Paris around midnight-I was so exhausted from a day trip to London for a business trip-black case, black seat, black of night, you get the picture. I called the cab company first thing in the morning and I actually recovered it! So this is hope

Well wherever you saw it Kia, it's a great idea. Also to just ask for the card back not the camera.

I download my memory card every day of my trip. That was fine until the boat capsized in Brazil in October. Even so, even though the camera was destroyed by the ocean water, someone managed to save the photos on my memory card even though my own devices would not read it anymore.
