Nice photos, Jason. They make me yearn to be back on Kauai.

Thanks so much for the nice comments. It's freezing and gray--and snow's on the way here in Nashville. Can't wait to get back to Kauai in mid-January.

The camera's a Nikon Coolpix P510. But the secret is to take hundreds of photos, crop the best ones--and share thirty-five!

Jason: I have a different scret. The trick is to use a good DSLR (or two) with very good lenses, take hundreds of photos, crop and process the best ones, and share 35.

The idea of using a Coolpix (or similar camera) shakes me down to the roots of my photographer's soul.

dwooddon: I'm not trying to be a professional photographer--or even a "serious" amateur. I just enjoy taking pix. But someday ... I'd like to move up to that next level. Just don't want to carry a case and extra lenses around. I'll leave that to those who are more dedicated ;-).

Thanks for the photos - and I am a point and shoot as many as possible also - and edit later - while my wife sometimes takes a long time setting up and then the picture/subject changes.

STOP IT! We will never be able to get a place on Kauai if you keep putting out these fabulous photos! Oh, how I long for March to get here so we can put ourselves into those photos....

It's a #ellhole. Why anyone wants to go there is beyond me. 18 more days until I continue my extensive research into that phenomena

Songdoc: Are you sure those aren't postcards you picked up?

Again, great work.

Thanks so much for the nice comments. Now that the holidays have passed I can hardly wait to get back to Kauai. (Two-and-a-half more weeks!!!) I've heard the whales are back.

Spent last evening looking at Princeville real estate listings and hoping I win the lottery ;-).

My dream: a 2-bedroom unit at Pali ke Kua with primo Bali Hai views .... for a mere $989,000 -- and a $655/month condo assoc. fee. ARRGGHHHH. It's a little small ... but I'd suffer through for those views.

Since we talked about photography, I'll share some fun news. I just learned that one of my photos won honorable mention in a national photography contest that had more than 7,000 entries.

I'm FREEZING in Philadelphia at the moment, stuck in a hotel room while the roads are sheets of ice--and counting the minutes until I arrive in Kauai in six more days!!!

Kal--Looking forward to hearing about your trip to the hellhole. I hope it wasn't too horrible--and that you didn't get frostbite when it dipped below 70.

Msteacher--Thanks! I was visiting relatives in NJ yesterday. You're going to LOVE Kauai. Feel free to ask any questions.

I'm just back from a glorious walk & swim at Hanalei Bay.

Here's a link to the top-10 winning photos:

I’m completely blown away to be in the top-10 because the other photos are INCREDIBLE. I love photography, but I’m a rank amateur, so I’m really thrilled!
