My family and I 2adults and 17 yo and 20 yo are transiting in Hong Kong July 15 2014 on our way home to Australia. Is there enough time to go into Hong Kong and if so what would you recommend as an itinerary? We will arrive at 3.45 pm and our flight is at 11.55pm that same night. Our luggage will be checked through to our final destination so we should only have hand luggage...is there a place at the airport to store this? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, if 4 people the taxi is best as only 1 Airport Express train ticket, return, is HK$180 and the taxi total might be HK$600, return. This to Central.

If this is your first time to Hong Kong, this is what I'd do
Take a taxi to The Peninsula. Have tea or a snack in the lobby.
(Or if you prefer a spectacular view to a colonial atmosphere choose the Intercontinental lobby instead)
Take a look at Nathan Road.
Walk along the harbor-side promenade to the Star Ferry
Take the Star Ferry to Hong Kong island
Walk or taxi up to the peak tram terminal
Take the peak tram to the top of the peak. Soak up the view.
Have a quick Cantonese dinner in Wanchai or Causeway Bay
Taxi back to airport

Regarding your bags/luggage: there is some short term storage place at the airport. Some shopping malls/sightseeing attractions have also lockers for short-term rent. All depends how big and heavy your "hand luggage" is.

Since you have roughly 8 hours you should have a good chance to do some sightseeing in HK and grab some food.

They answer the basic questions and give you some hints what to consider and take care of (e.g. time at customs/immigrations etc). Plus you get some decent overview of HK's attraction and and idea what is worthwhile to have a look or skip.

Same day Airport Express return costs the same as one-way, so $100 per head to/from HK; or $90 to/from Kowloon. Cheaper than taxi.

would highly recommend the airport express, it's fast and comfortable, 30min from the airport to central. From there, you can decide where to go depending on your interests (shopping, sightseeing or eating). If sightseeing, you could take the tram up to the peak and enjoy an afternoon tea there watching the sunset. I would recommend taking the taxi up to the peak and taking the tram back down (skips some queuing time).

Alternative is to head to the central pier and take the Star Ferry to Tsimshatsui, very enjoyable and you would be sampling some colonial age history (though they've demolished the old pier in central). You could then eat or shop around Tsimshatsui till it's time to head back, taxi to Kowloon station and take the airport express.

Given the taxiing time and immigration/customs time, you wouldn't have that many hours in the city, so best not to aim for too many places.

Assuming your flight arrives on time, you have 8 hours until departure.
Factor in at least 1/2 hour after landing before you can leave the airport. a 30-45 minute taxi ride to where you want to go, a return ride of 30-45 minutes, and a return to the airport at least one hour before your scheduled departure. This will leave you, at the very best, 5 1/2 hours in Hong Kong.
I would probably take a taxi to Kowloon, walk around for a while, have a good dinner and depart for the airport.
Do some more research on the area, travel time, etc. and plan your day.
