You need passports and have to clear customs at the Canadian border... then again between Canada and Australia and then again between Canada and the US... Why Canada?... that extra step to Canada can add hundreds to the cost of your flights...

Are you coming to Canada to get your flight or are you in Canada?? I have often travelled from Canada overseas on either my US passport or Canadian one and never had a problem. As Garyt22 says there would probably be more $ involved unless you have a super deal..To make certain talk to the airlines first and if you need any information they should know.

If you mean you are going to Australia from Canada, you should check with Australian immigration as to what visa charges might be required for holders of American passports. Do not assume entry is free, and the government's opinion is worth as much as, or maybe more than, the airline's.

Canadians and Americans require an e-visa for travel to Australia. If you book your flight through a travel agent they usually arrange it at no charge. Canadians applying themselves on line have to pay a non-refundable admin fee of $20. I believe the process is somewhat different for US citizens but in both cases it should be easy and quick. No paper involved, and the visa is linked to your passport so when it is scanned on arrival in Australia, you are good to go.
I'll see if I can find the link to the official Aus site.
