Hello all,

My husband and I are planning a week-long trip to California in mid to late March. I've travelled around Southern California a bit in the past but never been up north (it will be my husband's first time in the state).

I've wanted to visit Big Sur for quite some time and hoped that I might be able to get some feedback on general weather during that timeframe? We'll be visiting from the northeast and, while I don't expect temps to be warm, would prefer to come when it's not too rainy and chilly.

As an alternative, we would stick to LA/Palm Springs, but I was very much hoping for something new (to me).

March is hit or miss -- in short, totally unpredictable, but better than February, when I go. Since we're up in that area for 3 days over President's Day weekend, there is generally ONE day out of the three that is decent enough to do the 1/2 hour drive from Monterey to Big Sur. Just make sure you layer yourself, because you could be out in the sun and nice and warm, then hit a shady area and need to pull out the parka and mitts!

It is rarely cold in March, but it can be rainy. At this point, we are all HOPING for a rainy spring because we desperately need the rain, but it is anybody's guess what mother nature will actually bring us.

According to Weather Underground, the average high in March around Big Sur is in the low 60s. The average low is in the mid-40s. It has never, in the history of record keeping for Big Sur, gotten below about 35°F in March.

We visit most often in February. It is a bit of a crap shoot but we've had pretty good luck. One year got totally skunked by fog the day dedicated to the drive from Carmel to Big Sur. It is worth the gamble IMO.

Make sure to visit Point Lobos just south of Carmel. This is a chance to enjoy the ultimate Central Coast scenery up close and personal. Here's a few images of Point Lobos and other scenic stuff.

We're just about to book a return to the area to visit my sister...nice to have some kin in the area We're going the first week of March.
