Beach resort between Boston & NYC

Flying into Boston, & after a few days of seeing the city on foot, plan to rent a car to see a little of New England before dropping the car off in NYC.

Suggestions for a family-friendly beach resort that would be on the way?
Condo/cottage with some on-site activities & a nice beach.

It's not on "on the way' to New York but check a map, you're not going to find many "beach resorts" located between the two cities.

Boston and NYC are quite close, so you don't really want to limit yourself to "on the way".

When is your trip and how long will you be spending at the resort? Quite a few of the condo/cottage rentals are for one week, Saturday-Saturday and aren't available for shorter stays.

Though I have not stayed there myself, this place on Cape Cod has activities and a kid's club: http://www.redjacketresorts.com/red-...ach-resort.php

Agree that resorts in the sense of all-inclusives are limited and rentals during the season (cottages or condos or whatever) are usually for the week. There are many motels and inns on Cape Cod and also some near Newport RI and Mystic CT - but I don;t know that they would have activities other than pools.

However, there are many activities in the area that you could explore: biking, whale-watching, etc. Just check info on Cape Cod.

You don't when when you are traveling or the ages of the children; however, some families find Mystic Seaport to be an interesting stop on this route: http://www.mysticseaport.org

South of Boston - Plymouth area - has some nice beaches. Not really beach resorts, but look at a map and check rentals. Rhode Island also has some cute little beach towns. Keep in mind that most New England cottage rentals in-season are for a full week Sat-Sat.

Horseneck Beach in Westport, MA, South County beaches in RI, Watch Hill, RI has enormous Old Yankee high end resort hotel plus a carousel in the nearby village, in Connecticut, there are state parks with beaches near Stonington and Mystic, and Rocky Neck Beach is beloved by locals, seasonal or year round. Ride the steam train in Essex.

Thanks for the suggestions so far.
We're not looking for a full week rental, so I realize it will limit our options. Would just like a little more space than a standard hotel room.

This is the beginning of our "Cities of the NE" vacation & looking for a little break from city life in the middle of our trip.

Sorry - don;t see WHEN you will be ding this trip. If you are in off season you may be able to get a shorter rental of a cottage or condo.

Also - depending on timing/weather it may make a lot more sent to go south to north versus north to south.

If money is no object, then the Ocean House Hotel in Watch Hill RI might suit you. They do have a spa, croquet, squash, the ocean etc.

Are you willing to consider a lake instead of the ocean? If so that opens up your options. Someplace like the The Sagamore on Lake George, or perhaps somewhere Lake Winnipesaukee in NH.

Both lakes offer a lot of activities ranging from hiking to swimming, boating of all sorts, paddleboarding, kayaking.
