Where should I stay in Bangkok?
Hi,
I am traveling to Bangkok on the 24th January and leaving around the 31st or 1st or so. I am currently looking at accommodation and have a few questions.
1. Where should I stay? I have been looking at trying to say sort of in between Khao San and Sukumvhit areas.
2. Will the protests cause any extra congestion or problems in any particular area? Siam square? Democracy monument?
3. Is it better to wait until I get there, or closer to the date I get there to book? Is it possible that the protests / reduced tourism could provide a chance for bargain prices?

r first trip to BKK then I would suggest you stay on the river- you need to give us your budget for your hotel. Lux on the river there is the Penninsula, Oriental or you might opt for the Anatara or Shangrila. What is nice about river properties is that they are away from the hustle and bustle of downtown- yet they all have their hotel boats which ferry you to the sky train (Shangila is at the sky train). Those boat rides from the hotel to the sky train are very relaxing and the boats give you cold towels to refresh yourself. The Anatara has the added benefit of stopping at Asiatique- a great evening venue for restaurants, shopping and shows right on the river. Also being on the river gives you access to the river taxis which can take you to the Grand Palace, Wat Arun.
For downtown hotels you really want a hotel which is close to the sky train. Here are some that fit that bill- Plaza Athenee, Westin Sukhumvit, Intercontinental, Grand Hyatt Erawan.
One option might be to split your time between a river hotel and a downtown hotel. That way you have the best of both worlds. As much as possible you want to use the sky train and the river taxis to avoid BKK taxis as the traffic in BKK is pretty awfull.
Don't worry about the demonstrations- you will be fine - they are not everywhere and where they are just avoid them that day.
Book your hotel before you get there for the best deals and piece of mind. Here are some booking sites to consider- Sawadee.com and Agoda.

I'm another big fan of staying on the river and using the river boats and skytrain to get around.
To add to BillT's list: At a lower price point there is the Ibis, which I found very comfortable. A bit pricier, and definitely posher, there's the Ramada Plaza Menam.
My last visit I did stay off the river, at http://www.baansukhumvit.com/Soi18/Home.aspx but while it was fine, and convenient for people who shop, I still prefer the river.

Khao San road is mainly cheaper backpacker accomodation, sometimes very cheap! Sukumvit has more upmarket and mid range places. There are some nice place on or around KS rd but unless you are up for non stop partying I would head towards Sukumvit. A couple of visits ago we stayed in very nice mid range place on Sukumvit Soi 11 opposite the Bedsupper Club called Aloft. It had only just opened so was exceptional value for money, I don't know what the rates are now..
As others have said, if you provide info on the type of place and budget you are looking for you will get better targeted responses.

I am looking for accommodation priced between 800 and 1400 baht. I am single traveler, so I'm looking for a nice looking good value hotel in a nice location with free wifi, apart from that it doesn't really matter to me.

Lots of attractions along the river/ KS rd all easily reached from that area or by skytrain and boat from Sukumvit.
www.hostelworld.com is worth a look for budget accomodation ( NB not just hostels)
