Continue on or stopover?
Hi, Arriving into LAX on Tuesday around 9:30am from Australia. Trying to decide whether to o/night in LA or continue on to NY that day. I will be travelling with my 7 yr old son. He is a seasoned flyer, but I'm worried that we will be 31 hours in transit.
If we o'night in LA, what would you recommend doing for the afternoon?
Thanks!

I think it depends on whether NY is home or you are there for a visit, , whether or not your son or you are likely to get much sleep on the plane, or whether you really want to see L.A. Sounds like a stopover would be more of an aggravation since you don't have any clear plans, and will have to negotiate an unfamiliar city while suffering significant jet lag and likely sleep deprivation.
We have done YYZ to PER several times, which clocks in at 30+ hrs. not including time to and from airports. On the way there we have made a stop a couple of times when the schedule allowed us to get a good night's sleep on PER time, so we arrived refreshed and ready to enjoy ourselves. But on the way home we just want to get home.

I'm with eliz. I prefer just to bear the pain once and get to my destination. Unless you have a few days to unwind and explore LA I think you are better off just going on to NY since it will take you a time just to acclimate.
An argument the other way is that you could easily just enjoy hanging out in the the Santa Monica beach area for one day without a lot of pain. If you can find a reasonable hotel in Santa Monica or Venice Beach area a taxi ride from there from the airport will be quick.
The water won't be warm and it's not really beach season, so if you get a lot of beach time at home then I'd not bother.

You need to look at the clock a little. With a 9:30 arrival from Oz, you're looking at a noon departure to NYC at the earliest, after going through US border formalities at LAX. Given the 3-hour time difference between California and New York, and the five-hour flight, that means the earliest you'd actually be able to get into Manhattan (if that's where you're headed) would be around 10 - 10:30 PM local time. How does that sound?
On the other hand, by staying in LA you could get a hotel near the airport, which will be a lot cheaper than one in NYC, you could hop a taxi or the shuttle buses operated by some of the LAX-area hotels to Manhattan Beach, just a few minutes from the airport (much quicker than Venice or Santa Monica). Walk along the Strand, the beachfront pedestrian promenade, walk out the pier, watch the surfers (often big waves in December), have a meal at one of the many kid-friendly places in downtown MB, then a cab back to the hotel and into bed. The next morning, fly to NYC, arriving in the afternoon.
Sounds like an okay plan to me, but you know yourself and your son better than we do.

Shuttle buses from LAX hotels to Manhattan Beach are just fine..Round trip ticket allows hop on hop off. The Starwood Hotels (4 points Sheraton) had/has an offer for year of birth stay but it may be more time than you want. At any rate is is a good place to stop over..direct shuttle from airport. Liked Manhattan Beach for the day I spent on a stop over at LAX. The shuttle buses are not run by the hotels but the community and are very reasonable, caught at the corner as the concierge will direct you! You might want to consider a Starwood membership as there are often perks available and at no cost!
