Global Entry Program and TSA PreCheck Question

I am confused. IF we get Global Entry program, does that automatically enable us to use TSA PreCheck Program as well? Or do we have to apply separately for each program?

While the majority of our travel is domestic travel within US, we do fly to Europe about once a year. We are also planning on some longer, multi continent trips in the next few years.

I keep reading each website and can't figure out if I need to pay $100 for GE and then a separate $85 for PreCheck.

Thanks for helping me decipher what is probably a simple thing that I am over complicating.

I've had GE for a couple of years now and I have been automatically PreCheck for the last year. I made sure to enter my GE number on each airlines' website and it is always printed on my boarding passes.

Don't know if I'm just lucky or what but have only paid for GE.

When I had my Global Entry interview three weeks ago, I was given a number by the agent. He told me that was my Trusted Traveler number and that I would be in both programs. I flew from PHL that day as precheck. A week later leaving GSO I was not precheck. On return from BOS, I was. So here is my take away, enrollment in Global Entry also enrolls you in TSA precheck, but it won't work every time so pack prepared to take out liquids, take off shoes and open the laptop.

Well worth the $100!

Global Entry (GE) qualifies you as a "Trusted Travel" but doesn't automatically enroll you in the TSA PreCheck. As cmcfong says, when you get GE you'll be given a "Trusted Traveler" number - you must register this numb with your airline to get TSA PreCheck. You enter it in your "profile" on the airline's website. There's no additional cost for TSA PreCheck.

Thanks so much! I have completed the online portion for myself and DH was doing so, only to realize his Driver's License had expired this week! So he will renew DL and then continue his application.

I did give the Trusted Traveler number to my carriers. Still didn't work at GSO ( where I had been given ore check the week before).

We already have quite a few flights already reserved. I hope they will go back and enter in the Trusted Traveler # when we get it.

Even if you register your "Trusted Traveler" number with the airline there's never any guarantee you'll be granted TSA PreCheck on any given flight. Selection is random and not guaranteed for all flights.

We've had Global Entry/Trusted Traveler Status for a couple of years now and on average spouse and I get TSA PreCheck on about 85% to 90% of our flights.

What RoamsAround said - as a security measure the PreCheck designation is randomly not assigned on the boarding pass of Trusted Travelers who otherwise qualify. No way to know in advance, only find out when you check in.
Also, PreCheck is not available at all airports.

The TSA precheck has shown on my boarding passes. Are you saying that while it may show on your boarding pass one still might be randomly selected to go to the regular line? In other words your boarding pass show TSA precheck, you show up at that line and then get selected to go thru regular security? If so, do they do the regular check at the TSA preselect lane or send you to the regular lines?

We also had flights booked before we got our global entry. I went back and entered the number on all my previously booked flights. I also entered it in my UA profile as we typically fly UA. So far we have gotten the pre check on our flights and boy, it has really helped. It was especially helpful during the morning rush hour at LAX this past Monday. we whizzed thru the TSA preselect line.

The "random" selection is whether or not TSA Precheck appears on your boarding pass. You find this out when you check in (either on-line or at the airport) and your boarding pass is printed or downloaded to your Smart Phone.

If it shows TSA PreCheck on your boarding pass you are "approved" for that flight and for that flight only. If it's on the boarding pass you go to the TSA PreCheck line. The agent will scan your boarding pass and it will come up "green" on the screen and you'll be directed to proceed to the PreCheck x-ray machine. If TSA PreCheck IS NOT on the boarding pass you are NOT APPROVED for that flight and must use the regular line. If you are NOT Approved for that flight and try to use the PreCheck line you'll be shunted back to the regular line by the agent who screens your boarding pass.

Of course, if there's no "TSA PreCheck" line at the airport or the TSA Checkpoint you are using you'll have to go through the "regular" checkpoint regardless of way it says on your boarding pass.

Thanks for the explanation. I was worried that if I factored in TSA pre check for my arrival time at the airport, that I might be refused it even in the boarding pass had TSA Precheck on it. Have to say the $100 spent for Global Entry which also enrolled us in TSA Precheck has already been well worth the $.

One more thing: if you are flying internationally or connecting to an international flight, you will be denied pre-check.

That changed in May of this year. Itineraries with international flights are now eligible for Pre. I flew from O'Hare to Hong Kong a couple of weeks ago and was able to use the Pre line at ORD.

1 more Q: In looking at the Interview Scheduled notice; it says on the bottom - "Special Instructions: The Port of Albuquerque [where I am having interview] accepts payments in the form of Cash, Money Order or Cashier Check. Credit and debit cards cannot be accepted at this time."

Is there another fee to be paid?? I already paid the $100 when I applied.

Thanks~

If you've already paid the fee no additional payments are necessary.
