Compatsch, Seiser Alm .... Village amenities? Accommodations!

Compatsch, Seiser Alm .... Village amenities? Accommodations!
In September 2014 my husband and I intend to spend several weeks hiking in the Dolomites. Our first base is Compatsch. I have found some accommodations, but most seem very large. We would prefer a smaller pension ( under 20 rooms ) with halfboard available. Can anyone recommend a website or accommodation?
Also, I have been unable to determine if there is grocery to buy snacks or food for picnics in Compatsch. Nor have I been able to determine if there are restaurants separate from the village hotels. Any information you can share about Compatsch or Saltria as a base for hikers would be appreciate.

Thanks VV.... the information I have been able to locate is "thin" for groceries / snacks / etc. But I know this trip is not out of the norm. I just need to find the right resources.

I stayed in the village of Siusi which is down the mountain from Compatsch and caught the gondola up to Compatsch every day for skiing.
Groceries - I am 95% certain there was no supermarket/grocery store in Compatsch. I am trying to remember whether there was even a shop where you could buy a can of drink and some crisps/chocolate. I will have to ask the wife if she can remember. Otherwise your only choice is to get the gondola or bus down to the villages of Siusi or Castelrotto where you will find spar grocery stores. But you have to be careful as I think they close on a Sunday and the one in Siusi is shut at some point during the day.
Restaurants - I can't think of any restaurant that is not attached to a hotel. This is not a problem however and you should be able to walk into any hotel and eat in their restaurant.
Mountain huts - During the day you can stop and eat/drink at one of the mountain huts or hotel restuarants located on the hiking trails. There are many places to stop at and the prices are very reasonable (in my opinion). So no need to return to Compatsch for lunch
Accomodation - The hotel plaza is a smaller 3* hotel right in the centre of Compatsch which does half board

Also in Compatsch (just a few minutes walk from the centre) is the Hotel Zorzi. This looks like a new hotel (or newly rennovated) and does look nice. It looks like a small hotel.

ANother option is the hotel Rosa which does look nice and is highly recommended. But maybe a bit big for your requirements

Best base for hikers: Although you can stay in any accomodation on the Seiser Alm plataeu, I would personally stay in Compatsch. This is because you have immediate access to the gondola or bus down to the larger villages of Siusi or Compatsch. From these villages you can then catch a bus to Ortisei from where you can get another gondola and then cable car to the Seceda mountain area above the Gardena valley.
As a second option you could stay in Saltria. It is located on the main road that runs through Seiser alm and busses do run to and from there. However apart from a few hotels there is nothing else there. I'm not even sure if any of the chairlifts open during the summer from Saltria
Or you could stay in any hotel that is not in Compatsch or Saltria such as the Panorama, icaro, Monte Piz, FLoralpina and Sonne. However these are mostly located away from the main road and you literally will have to stay in the hotel in the evening as there will be nothing else around you.
Evenings - Just be aware that even in Compatsch the only bars to visit in the evenings will be hotel based. Forget about any discos or wondering round shops etc.
September - I see you intend to visit the Dolomites in September. Please note that some gondolas may stop running after the second week in September. So make sure you check beforehand which gondolas/cable cars will be open in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th week of September for each of the regions or villages you plan to stay in
