Barcelona

Traveling to Barcelona for 4 days at the end of January. How will the weather be? We are staying in the L'Eixample area. Any recommendations on restaurants? Also, we will be there for my birthday so maybe a nice spot to celebrate? We are 3 females in our mid to late 20s. Thanks

For historical weather records:

For restaurant recommendations, you may have to start a new thread to catch the attention of anyone who could help. The title on this thread ("Barcelona") is too vague.

Cal Pep is a great tapas place - arrive early and line up for the counter seats.

Well, January falls within the season of winter in Barcelona. The average temperature of days tends to about 13°C and the average minimum temperature drops down to 4°C. There are many good restaurants where you can eat like 9 Reinas, Alkimia, Annapurna. And about your birthday celebration Taller de Tapas is a good spot for it.

La Flauta in vibrant Carrer Aribau is one of many recommendable restaurants in Eixample. About both the street and La Flauta: http://suitelife.com/2011/02/28/arib...treet-profile/
La Flauta: http://www.tripadvisor.com/Restauran...Catalonia.html

Close by and very popular L'Aribau is my favourite lunch place in Barcelona. On the corner of C/Aribau and Corts Catalanes, just beside the university from 1450. This is a very typical and local atmosphere place with no fuss and great Catalan food. Lunch is the main meal of the day for most Spanish, and places like this normally has got bargain three course Menu del día (Today's menu) with drinks incl. from about 1pm.

In L'Aribau businesspeople, academics and all kind of locals drop in for a three course lunch for 8,60€ (before 14, 9,60€ after 14h). Salad or today's soup, grilled meat or fish with poatatoes/vegetables and dessert. Excellent place with lots of local specialities. Had a wonderful local sausage Botifarra with slightly garlicy white beans here last time in May for some 6€.

For a birthday celebration, you still have time to make a reservation at Tickets, the new paradise version of traditional tapas style restaurant run by the Adrià brothers of the world's by far most awarded restaurant the past decade, now closed El Bulli. Very affordable Tickets was up on the list of the world's 100 best restaurants after one year (#77). http://www.theworlds50best.com/

The basic concept is traditional tapas prepared and presented as you never would imagine and with tastes to the maximum. Iberian ham, Spanish cheeses, olives, croquetas, tomatoes, anchoas, shellfish, Iberian pork etc etc plus some surprises from out of this world. Just tell the waiter how much you would like to spend and what kind of food you like, and then leave it up to the kitchen to make it an evening never to forget. The four of us had some 17 dishes here a couple of months ago and payed around around 60-65€ each with wine/cava included. Lived very much up to the high expectations.

You can normally only book online and only two months in advance. Tables are literally gone 10 minutes after midnight two months prior to every day year around, so you have to be online on midnight Barcelona time two months on the day before you want to book a table. http://www.ticketsbar.es/web/en/

And Cal Pep, suggested above, is great!, but it might easily turn out more expensive than Tickets.

Check Timeout.com for ideas geared to your demographic - there is no end of activities for 20somethings in Barcelona.

I second the recommendation of Cerveceria Catalana - excellent tapas! For a special bday dinner you may want to consider the tasting menu at Cinc Sentits or Commerc24

For a taste of France in l'Eixample Dreta, try Cafe Emma, on Carrer Pau Claris, http://www.cafe-emma.com/
Cafe de l'Academia, in the Barri Gotic, would be great for an authentic birthday experience. No web site, but you can find it by searching. Great food at acceptable prices.

Tickets won't let me see past November, is there a way to book it differently? I could just be blind...

Might be a problem with the site. But the most likely reason is that all tables are taken for the next two months, the tables are usually taken within ten minutes after midnight Barcelona time for the night exactly two months ahead. They also leave a few tables for drop-in guests, so you might turn up at 7pm and see what happens. Or ask at [email protected]
Good luck!

Seems to be room at Tickets on Jan. 14th at 19:30. There is an arrow on the Nov. calendar to move it to Jan and Dec.
