The plan is to spend 4 nights in Tuscany , 5 nights in Amalfi and then 4 nights in Rome before we fly out of Rome.

Would it make sense to stop for 1 night in Rome after Tuscany, this way we will not be exhausting a whole day just trying to reach Amalfi from Tuscany.

We rather do a 2 or 3 hour trip from Tuscany to Rome, reach Rome in the afternoon have lunch, explore the city, spend a night there, before heading out to Amalfi Coast the next day via train. Please give me your thoughts and suggestions, if this would the right thing to do?

After Amalfi we can then spend 3 nights (instead of 4) in Rome which will be the last leg of our trip and then fly out.

We have made the trip both ways. I prefer using the day to travel from Tuscany to your final destination but it is really your call. Your one night in Rome is a bit of a waste and you will waste part of 2 days getting to AC.

Your question makes no sense in light of the sentence where you state what you really want to do. "The right thing to do" is so subjective - making that overnight stop seems a waste of time to me, and you've already stated your preference, so what else is there to say?

I think looking at the whole picture and not just this segment might frame your thinking better. Of course, since you have not mentioned where in Tuscany you are staring and where in Amalfi Coast you are ending up, I can only give you an example. Assuming you are doing all trip by public transport.

First look at the particular segment.

Florence to Napoli: 2 hours 51 min if by train. Whether you break this trip or not, you will incur this amount of time either in one piece or in two pieces (your thinking.)

You thinking: Stop over-night in Rome, the proceed next day to AC. This incurs 1) getting off train at Rome 2) trip from the station to your hotel 3) hotel check-in 4) unpack 5) repack next morning 6) hotel check-out 7) trip to the station, and schlep you luggage onto the train.

Skip Rome in the middle: you eliminate everything mentioned in the previous paragraph WHILE spending less money, losing less time in transit, expending less energy schlepping your luggage off/on train, taxi, hotel, etc.

Now, in what way you thought your thinking was better?

By time you get from train to hotel and checked in, etc. you could be nearly to Naples, so I, for sure, would not overnight in Rome.

If I were going to do a one night anywhere on this itinerary, I would stay in Naples and visit the archeological museum the next morning, or visit Pompeii the next day on the way to Amalfi.
That might make sense, it would depend on exactly where you are staying - in Amalfi or somewhere else on the AC?

Stay in Tivoli, east of Rome. You can visit Hadrian's Villa or the Villa d'Este (or both, one upon arrival and one before leaving).

not worth a stop in Rome. You wouldn't have much time. Napes is a good choice and an interesting place..Birthplace of pizza which is amazing! great museum and pompei is s must
