San Francisco question

How hilly / flat is the walk between the Montgomery St. BART and North Beach using Montgomery > Columbus Ave. ?? Or is there a public transportation option ??

Will you have suitcases? Where in North Beach??

The F streetcar may work if you don't have suitcases.

The #11 bus, which you can get at Sansone will get you there too.

This will help; it has street grade %.

Sorry, #11 is not bus line, it is a bike route!

#30 or 8BX should get you there

I think it's pretty flat - slight uphill on Columbus.

Thanks all. We wont have luggage. Staying overnight at SFO before leaving for overseas next day. Thinking of taking BART into city so we can walk around and have a good meal rather than wasting day at hotel. Just was trying to recall if this route was as hilly as some parts of the city can be, like around Coit and Nob Hill.

You don't need to go all the way to North Beach to have a good meal. Get off BART at 24th or 16th street and dine in the Mission. Delfina & Foreign Cinema are two of my favorites.

Take BART from SFO to the EMBARCADERO STOP. You will then be at the Hyatt Regency Hotel and near Boulevard Restaurant, Perry's for casual dining, Slanted Door in the Ferry Building (highest selling restaurant in SF) and many more on the waterfront. Great getting off spot and many places to eat within easy walk.

Stu...I know you are the guru of San Francisco. I have made a reservation at Delfina. What would you suggest to spend 2-3 hours in that part of the city, ie. Mission District ?? Appreciate any insight you could give. Have never spent any time in that part of the city in my prior trips. We just want to be able to walk around and experience the area in what is a very short amount of time. Thanks.

Great choice. If it's a nice day, walk around Dolores Park, then stroll Valencia St between 18th and 24th, then stroll 24th st. Stop and have a drink somewhere then head to dinner.

My suggestion is the same as sf7307's.

Get off BART at 24th street & walk 1 block west on 24th to Valencia. Turn right on Valencia and walk north down one side of Valencia to 16th St, then back to 24th on the other side of Valencia. Then walk 1 block west on 24th to Guerrero & walk north to 20th St. Then turn left & walk 1 block west on 20th & you'll see Dolores Park. Continue west on 20th to the corner of Dolores Park, at Church & 20th. You will be rewarded with a great view of downtown San Francisco from the corner of Dolores Park.

Then off to dinner.

If you can get a table at Delfina, take the footpath north along the west edge of Dolores park (follow the Muni Metro train tracks) - towards the lights on the tennis courts. When you reach to northern edge of the park, turn right (east) and walk along 18th street next to the park. Walk on the north side of the street. As you leave the edge of the park, a few doors past Doloros & 18th is BiRite Ice Cream!!!. Note the location. Cross 18th St and continue east on 18th, and soon you'll see Delfina. After dinner at Delfina, return to BiRite and have an ice cream - our favorite flavor is salted caramel.

If you choose to dine at Foreign Cinema (look online at the menus of both Delfina & Foreign Cinema to choose), at the edge of Dorores Park with the view downtown, retrace your steps from 20th Street & Church - walking east on 20th - 3 blocks to to Valencia. Turn right (south) on Valencia & walk 1 block to 21st street & turn left (east) & walk 1 block east to Mission. Turn right (south) on Mission - and soon you'll see Foreign Cinema. I am purposely not taking you on Mission St itself - except for a 1/2 block to get to the restaurant - which is on Mission.

If you dined at Delfina & BiRite, walk east on 18th to Mission. then north (left) to the Mission & 16th BART station to return back to the airport. If you dined at Foreign Cinema, walk to 24th st to catch BART.

A little scary, but I was surprised how much less scary it was, than a year ago. My wife didn't want to walk there, but when we did two weeks ago, we both noticed how some of the "niceties" had spread along Valencia towards 16th within the last couple of years. The Mission is changing!!!

I must be the only person who doesn't like Bi Rite's salted caramel...

If we avoid Mission itself and head from Delfina along one of the parallel streets, yet heading from 18th to 16th, would that be better ??

Nope - we have a friend who doesn't like it either.

SAB. We're having dinner tomorrow night at Padrecito. A Fodors person out here from Indiana (my wife's home state) is joining us. She's been on a "dining tear" since she arrived on Saturday. Sunday she has Mimosas & brunch at the Cliff House. " We are sitting here at the Cliff House having breakfast. The view is simply divine. Having a mimosa with my untraditional breakfast of crab cocktail, heavy on the horseradish, Johnson omelet (dungeness crab) and popovers and marmalade."

Dinner at Contigo also that night "Just have to tell you that Contigo was amazing. Loved the anchovy moncadito and the Catalan tomato toast topped with Iberico Jamon that we requested. The albacore crudo with smoked eggplant and the xipirons with arroz negra took care of my seafood craving while hubby was immensely pleased with the meltingly tender lamb tagine with dates and couscous and scraped every last bit of the tripe with chorizo and chickpeas. Washed everything down with a half bottle of cava and a bottle of a Syrah blend. Of course, had to end it with churros con chocolate and the prickly pear and orange cardamom gelati".

Yesterday she had a 3 hr lunch with a friend at Betelnut. "So we had two tasty cocktails and had a very relaxed lunch. Loved the oysters with sriracha and the bacon wrapped prawns in ancho jam and the grilled oysters. This was followed by papaya salad and chicken satay, their fabulous crispy spring rolls and crunchy cauliflower. We ordered too much, but everything was quite tasty". Then dinner that night at R&G Lounge because her husband wanted Dungeness Crab. "Then the feasting began. Deep fried oysters bigger than an egg. Salt and pepper crab. Eggplant. Fried rice with dried scallops. Again, too much food, but oh it was soooo good. Glad that the waiter talked me out if ordering half of a Peking duck."

She also has reservations for dinner at Acquerello, and is going to stand in line at State Bird.

either way Valencia is a more pleasant walk than Mission to either 16th or 24th St.

Depends on where you dine. Delfina is on 18th street near Guerrero - which is 2 full blocks from Mission, then 2 full blocks from 18th to the 16th St BART station - total 4 blocks. If you go to the 24th station - it is an 8 block walk after dinner.

If you dine at Foreign Cinema, it is a 2 3/4 block walk to the 24th St BART station after dinner.

Eighteenth St is one of the most interesting streets in the Mission - after Valencia (and Victorian houses on Guerrero if you like Victorians). I would not decide where to dine based on avoiding the 16th street BART station - just stay off Mission as much as possible to minimize any "gritty" surroundings close to 16th (go 18th to Valencia, then north 2 blocks on Valencia to 16th, then 1 block to Mission).
