We will be in Tokyo in the near future, and are deciding between Park Hyatt and Ritz Carlton. We are using points, so price is not an issue. I know they are both excellent hotels, but for tourism, which is the better location? We probably want to spend the first day or two wandering around - shopping, eating at yakatoris, etc. We will also spend time at the hotel as my husband recovers from jet lag.

Kind of a toss-up to me. Tokyo is one of those places with only a few dedicated tourists “sights”, it’s mostly about neighborhoods. I like Roppongi which is the Ritz neighborhood; lots of restaurants, although it is not an “old” neighborhood. Park Hyatt is closer to the Ginza if that matters to you. I have not stayed at the Park Hyatt, but have stayed at the Ritz. The views, especially at night, are really quite stunning. Park Hyatt may be similar.

The Ritz (in Roppongi) is a more central location. (Roppongi and the Ritz are also much closer to Ginza than is Shinjuku & the Park Hyatt. Perhaps Cicerone meant the Grand Hyatt, which is also in Roppongi but with easier access to the subway.)

Park Hyatt is perfect for a pampered and relaxing stay, but its location (on the western edge of the sprawling downtown, well away from a subway or train station) isn't the best if you're planning to go to different locations throughout the city.

Wish I could assist with personal impressions of the Ritz Carlton Tokyo; of late, it's the beloved Park Hyatt for corporate stays for me. (My profile page review of the Tokyo Park Hyatt is 'groundhog day' in the best possible day.) As graciously noted above, hard to go wrong with the Ritz. Other than the PH, it's been the Peninsula and Four Seasons Marunouchi for all-too-brief Tokyo holiday weekend stays; special properties, both. (And thanks to another esteemed Fodorite's recco, the Shangri-La Tokyo is next on the weekend holiday list.)

Will gently enquire to your ultimate point accrual status and potential room/suite category. Enquire, because my current, particular, and favourite Tokyo Park Hyatt corporate booking is 'Park View King, Corner Room' (via upgrade). (Perhaps some of you frequent Asia business travellers out there can relate to the comfort of 'coming home' to a known, particular lodging.)

Thank you the comments. I appreciate the help. Sounds like the PH is wonderful, but RC may be in a better location for our intentions. And the RC is also wonderful! Win-win, I guess.
