4-5 Days in Fez/ Chefchaouen
Hi there!
I am spending 18 days between barcelona/morocco/lisbon with my boyfriend in april. After researching as much as possible it seems like I am most attracted to seeing Fez and Chefchaouen. Any insight on affordable but cool and SAFE places to stay would be awesome also any recommendations on how to travel between towns( I saw buses are accessible from fez to chefchaouen easily). I was thinking about flying into fez and then taking the bus to chef and then curious what you all would recommend on making our way back to portugal, either flying out of fes or perhaps taking the train/bus/ferry route back to spain and then catching a flight there. ( I realize this would take a long time but it may be cool to see the straights of Gibraltar etc) Is 4-5 days enough time to do these two towns? Any recommendations on things to do while there would be very helpful! I think it may be to short of a stay to do a camel day trip but if you guys disagree I would be curious for a recommendation from one from fez. Any advice will be much appreciated!

Can't help with Chefchaouen, but we're just back from a Morocco trip and spent a couple of days in Fes.
4-5 days should be fine. If you can spend 2 full days in Fes, you can get a good feel for the town. We stayed at Dar Faracha Fes. It was a great riad and would stay there again (look up my other posts for more information). Great host and nice location. I runs about $85 per night including breakfast.
We didn't take the bus, but found most transportation was good, especially the trains.
4-5 days should be fine. If you can spend 2 full days in Fes, you can get a good feel for the town. We stayed at Dar Faracha Fes. I cannot help you in regard to travel from Barcelona to Morocco and from Morocco to Portugal, except that I guess that you will go through Tangier at some time. First, I suggest that you look at the Morocco postings on this site, including mine from a very recent visit. Second, there are numerous buses on different lines that go from Tangier to Chefchaouen (about three hours' travel, I believe) and from Chaouen to Fez (about four hours). Presuming that you return to Tangier from Fez (or do the reverse), you could take the train or the bus to Rabat, which people on this forum say is a nice destination, and continue on by train or bus instead of going straight from Fez by bus to Tangier. My guidebook implies doubt on the feasibility of flying to Fez.
As for the town of Chaouen and the city of Fez, I have written sufficiently of Chaouen in one posting. Fez is very different. It is an enormous city surrounded by an ancient wall and many gates. Much of the medina (that area within the wall) reminds one of the Middle Ages, with men using manual labor to produce products, donkey caravans, men pushing and pulling carts, and a labyrinth of alleyways. The smells, the cats, the flies, and the crowds of local shoppers create an impression of chaotic Asia that may reinforce stereotypes that some of us want to overcome. ZZ

On the front page of The New York Times Travel Section today (Sunday, October 27, 2013) begins a lengthy article, with photographs, on Fez. You can view the print version online, too, with comments from readers, but, then, you would miss the color images that add much to the description. Your local library probably has this paper, if you don't subscribe. ZZ
