What is public transit like these days in LA?

Thinking about a weekend in LA in mid February. We are big believers in using public transit whenever possible.

We will fly in to LAX and then need to get to hotel:
Hotel Palomar LA - Westwood.
10740 Wilshire Blvd

Can we use public transit to get to and from airport/ hotel?

While visiting, we were thinking of heading to Getty Villa and Getty Center. Other plans not made as of yet. Again, public transit possible?

I live in the 'burbs of LA many years ago, so my knowledge is limited as to what's it like in this century! I There was no metro and I always drove into the city as I worked at Cal State - LA

Thanks~

Still bad...

I'm sure someone will write in with some specific MTA info, but it's only taxi or slow bus to your hotel and the Getty.

Ok, so it's looking like renting a car is going to have to happen...I see the flyaway bus but it's $10 pp/ each way. A car rental is looking like $25, of course, there's parking at hotel...

Thanks, gigib

Yep-rent a car. LA is not yet into the mass transit century and where you want to go it's better. remember the Getty is located of 405 freeway currently under construction. so check closures at hotel desk. also try Uber or Lyft if you dont want to rent a car

The Flyaway ends very close to your hotel (about 5 blocks). Once they hiked it up to $10, it really wasn't worth it if you were with 2 or more people.

For the Getty Villa, you'll need to rent a car. You could get away with not renting one for the museum, but, to me, it isn't worth the time or the expense of public transport -- for those areas.

But that's just because you're staying in Westwood. We now have light rail, a subway, and other assorted public transit that is, in fact, widespread and good. So completely different than when you lived in the 'burbs. For example, the Expo Line will take you from Culver City all the way to USC and downtown to meet with the red line. And the Expo Line will continue through to Santa Monica in about 2 years time.

There are still fights over the path of extension to the purple line, which currently ends at Wilshire & Western. But the plan is to get a stop in Century City, one in Westwood, then continue on to the VA hospital just west of the 405.
