A friend and I will be arriving in Atlanta late on a Saturday night and plan on meeting my sister and her family for brunch Sunday morning before my friend and I head for Asheville. We are looking for a moderately priced, kid-friendly (niece and nephew are 10 and 8) place we can meet up. Suggestions, please..............

Well, if you want a bit of history and a feature of Diners Driveins and dives, look at The Colonnade. In business since maybe the 30's!! Has their old menu on display. Just old time southern food VERY well prepared. We met friends in Atlanta there and it was fun and good. They don't take credit cards, just FYI.
And we went on a Sunday and it was packed with after church diners.

I like the Colonnade. Old Atlanta/ southern. Good food. Full bar. Known for their "Gays and Grays". The diners will be pretty evenly split between young gays (mostly men) and Old Atlanta grey hairs. A very comfortable atmosphere. Everyone is happy and relaxed and a lot of folks know each other. The wait staff has been there forever.

We are having delicious weather and if you want outside dining, go to Einstein's in Midtown.

If you just want a good basic brunch place, there are several J. Christophers around Atlanta and they are known for their brunch and you'll see lots of kids.

The Colonnade sounds interesting.........Thanks for the heads up on the no credit card thing! What time did you go, Gretchen? Maybe we can go early enough to avoid the after church crowd.

I forgot to put in my OP that we will be there mid-October, but we'll keep Einstein's in mind in case the good weather hold out!

I don't have a restaurant recommendation, but when I travel to new cities I always refer to the web site urbanspoon.com. It's all patron reviews so it's a bit more trustworthy than Zaggots. Plus there are filters so that you can actually limit it to kid-friendly/brunch. I've even used the site on my smart phone when I've gotten to a restaurant only to find that there's a two hour wait and need another recommendation fast. It's not available for every city, but I know that Atlanta is included.

The weather in mid-October will be absolutely delicious. Nothing is better than fall weather in Atlanta. Still warm but with a bite in the crisp air. The mountains on the way to Asheville will be absolutely gorgeous!

There's an ATM machine as soon as you go into the doors of the Colonnade. They think of everything

All what Starrs said. We were there about 1 I think and there wasn't a particular "wait". I think we were seated right away--and it was in October, as a matter of fact. It was very cool/cute, and what Starrs said about the staff is right==just down home.

The wife and I just got home from a visit to our son in Atlanta. We had lunch at a place called "Chicken and the Egg". We enjoyed it very much! It was fairly reasonable and a very nice looking place! It was a week day lunch, so there weren't any kids there. They do have a Sat. and Sun. brunch. You can check their website; just google Chicken and the Egg.
It's in Marietta, but that's almost the same as Atlanta. It's northwest. We certainly intend to go back when down there.

Glad you do. The OP doesn't.

The OP is from California. She's headed to Asheville.

Why in the world would she want to leave Atlanta and head NW to a restaurant for brunch when they are going to be driving NE towards Asheville?

It seems a strange recommendation to me. I'm sure it's convenient for your route to/from Tennessee, but heading to Marietta seems REALLY a strange routing for the OP.

While you might enjoy the Colonnade (we do) it doesn't serve brunch--it just opens early for dinner on Saturdays and Sundays.

57th Fighter Group might be fun for kids. The food is pretty good (brunch is a buffet) and it is right at a small airport so you can watch planes take off and land. Decorated like a WWII officers' club.


Concur in NOT going to Marietta for lunch. That's way too far out of town and there are lots of places right in the City.

The 57th Fighter Group would be perfect for my aviation crazy nephew!! I will definitely pass that on to my sister.

Plans have changed, and my sister won't be joining my friend and I for brunch, but she and I are still trying to figure out if we want to try one of the above mentioned places, or if we should just eat our way to Asheville by stopping at some of the places starrs recommended.
