I rented a motorbike and I was at a intersection and a car jumped a stop sign and hit the front of my motorbike. The motorbike and I fell to the road and I got pretty scratched up and so did the bike. I didn't catch the license plate of the car and they didn't stop.

I am traveling on a budget and only have 250 euro left in my account (am leaving the island in 3 days). I wasn't planning on having this expense, obviously. I am worried if I take it back (after reading stories on here), they will charge me at least 500+ euro. I don't have that money to pay.

What would happen if I were to just leave without returning the bike? I don't want to do that, but I don't know what my other options are (what happens if I go there and then am unable to pay?)

I'm from the US (New York) and all they have of mine is my driver's license.

Any advice... help?

The rental agency not take your credit card info? How did you pay for the rental?

What would you do in the USA? It is because people do ignorant things like that that the rest of us have to pay more for our car rentals. Surely you had insurance? Did you report the accident? Take the bike back, explain the issue and pay what you agreed when you signed for the bike.

You've already had some good answers on Trip Advisor. You are only making things worse by not reporting the hit and run to the police, and delaying going to the rental agency. I'm not sure what the purpose is of posting this - are you waiting for somebody to agree with you?

You hired a scooter, was there no insurance involved? Did you decline it? I agree with the others, it is vital you report the accident and return the scooter (if you don't, you have stolen it - and they know who you are and where you live)

What the heck are you going to do with the bike? Take it home with you? Dump it in the woods? Do you really think the rental agency would not be able to find you?

If they have your home address they can track you down...do you want to be worrying about this when you get home??

The rental agency has your name and you are on a tiny island, where nothing stays hidden.

You can leave the island only from the port or airport, finding you might be easier than you think. ( and others before you have tried that too).

Go to the rental agency and try to resolve the whole issue in the best way that you can.

If your story is true, you should have gone to the police station right after the accident.

You need to report this right away. At the moment it is a minor accident. Yes, it may cost you the deductible. If you can;t put that on your credit card you will have to pay it when you get home.

If you don;t return the bike it will be considered theft - a crime rather than just silly behavior - and believe me they will follow you for that, collect the full price and there may very well be legal repercussions.

Sorry - but you are handling this like a child (hide the broken vase and mom won;t find you were playing ball in the house) rather than an adult. Fess up now before you are in real trouble.

I posted some time ago an incident that happened to me in Rome with a scooter accident. It was my fault. I paid the money to fix it. They had taken a 500 euro deposit on my c/c and I paid the difference (LOTS of damage). It was the beginning of my vacation and was not an expense I budgeted for; HOWEVER, I adjusted and managed (more pizza, less steak).

They will find you. You will be in trouble if you do not return the bike. If you are posting this crazy idea here, I am sure that you are not familiar with the local laws concerning such an incident. File the police report if you can and take back the scooter. And I find it hard to believe that you were able to rent one without a c/c deposit. At the end of the day, you are now responsible for it for not taking care of the situation immediately (at the site of the accident).

You are contemplating going from a hit-and-run victim to a hit-and-run perpetrator. I've seen people put in jail until they come up with the money to pay for damages to rental property. Don't make that mistake.
