Chicago - Meters on Sundays and holidays

Are the parking meters in the Chicago loop (or near the loop) free on Sundays and holidays?

I have been reading about parking options for an overnight stay from Sunday into Labor Day. I think at one time, there was free parking on Sunday. However, that may have changed.

Parking meters in The Loop an River North are enforced 7-days per week including holidays. Some spaces are enforced 24-hours per day while others are only enforced 8 am until midnight.

Sundays are free only in some residential areas.

I found the answer to my question. Earlier this week, I contacted the Chicago parking department and they called me back this morning.

Typically the meters in the loop are in force 24 hours per day. They are not free on Sunday nor on holidays.

I asked if some areas were free and she said they are mainly north of North Ave., west of Halstead or South of Roosevelt. (I would double-check before not paying.)

You didn't really think Chicago would NOT collect money, if there was a way to do it, did you? haha

I'm a down-stater, not a Chicagoan; love the city, but it's expensive to park.

Chicago doesn't operate the parking meters in the city. In 2008, they were leased to a private company for 75-years in return for a cash payment of $1.2 billion that the city spent within two-years. It's one of the legacies of the Daley Administration.

Well, in searching out information, I did see where someone had kept their car in a garage through the week and then parked on the street for free on a Sunday and Memorial Day. But since it seems like the rates have been in a state of flux, I figured I should check that out.
