Mykonos advice
Dear All
We are going to a wedding in Mykonos at the end of September / early October and cannot wait.
Does anyone know what the weather will be like then and/or whether it will be worth buying a thin suit or whether a woolen suit would be ok?
Also, does anyone have any good recommendations for beaches / restaurants / bars at that time of year - we will be hiring a car so will be easy to get around.

We used to travel to the island early in September but for the last 4 years we have gone the last week of that month to the end of the first week in October.
We’ve had much the same pattern of weather each time. Warm (not hot) sunny days but the evenings are cooler, especially in our second week when a light jacket was needed when heading out to dinner.
Just occasionally we have gone to a few restaurants who advise they are not carrying the full menu because it is the end of season. It wasn’t a problem though because what they did have was plentiful and fantastic!
I feel sure a thin suit will be fine if the service and meals etc will be taken outside daytime.
Find an island guide and read up on the beaches. They will be quieter of course, some in the north of the island possibly deserted, and the beach parties will have stopped a few weeks before you get there. For me, that’s an added bonus. The beaches we usually visit and return to every year are Fteli, Agia Anna, Agios Ioannis, Agios Sostis and Kalo Livadi (this has now become our favourite but a good distance from Mykonos town – you having a car will help!).
Happy to recommend some restaurants but what’s your budget? We tend to eat low to middle range and definitely not high-end but maybe can give you some ideas. Can't give you any bar recommendations as we usually always return to our hotel after dinner and have our drinks there. During our walks through the streets in the evening though I can't recall noticing any bars being closed. Maybe others here can help?

It's good to see a post from Jon again, who knows Mykonos well. I've been there at the opposite end of the season (May) and really enjoy the island at those times, when it is fairly quiet.
Yes, I think a summer-weight suit will work best — wool would be stifling if the wedding turns out to be on a hot day, which is still possible that time of year. To see actual weather stats over a two-week spread at the end of September go to http://www.wunderground.com/history/...atename=Greece. Averages are on the top of the page, but if you scroll down, will find actual weather over the last several years. If you prefer fahrenheit you can change the settings at the top tight corner of the page.
Bring along a light jacket and/or sweater for the evenings, as you won't be wearing the suit every day. Mykonos is known to be windy, but most days will be warm and sunny or partly cloudy. Water temperatures will still be warm from the summer. My favourite beach is Paradise, closely followed by the quieter Agios Ioannis, the latter still known for its appearance in the old Shirley Valentine film.

Thanks for your advice all of you. It is only 4 weeks until we travel and we cant wait. We dont want to go mad on food - however we would like one mid - high end restaurant for our last night and the others mid range. Thanks for the advice re the weather as I will make sure I pack a mix of both light and swarm clothes. Will definitely check out Paradise beach!!

I'm not sure what that means, but Paradise Beach should be good at the end of September. The beach clubs close in the middle of the month, so it will be quiet when you get there.

Have just got back from Mykonos for some of the end of the season sun, sea and sand - the weather was fab however if you are looking for places to travel next year, it is probably not the best idea for cheap holidays 2014.
There were some amazing places though and as it was at the end of the season, it was a bit more reasonable than I can imagine it would normally be during the high season.
There are some amazing beaches and if you shop around you can find some fab places to eat
Why not try Platis Gialos - lovely little bay - with some amazing restaurants
Ag. Ioannis boasts Hippie Fish where you can grab a rather alcoholic cocktail (quite pricey though) to watch the sunset.
We did however find "Kikis" in Aghios Sostis - great beach, and the food at this little gem was unbelievable. BBq everything and delicious Greek salads all for a fairly reasonable price (compared to the rest of the island).
Panormos beach is a long stretch of sand however it can be a bit littered, as it was when we were there.
Up at the North of the island is Fokos beach - it is a bit of a treck to get there down dirt roads (you need a car) but there is a lovely little taverna with a fantastic view.
Kalafatis has some awesome water sports, however they only do wind surfing if it is windy.
Also, take a trip to Delos if you get time - the ferry costs 1 Euros (and an extra 5 when you arrive) but it is well worth the trip to see some ancient Greek ruins.
All in all Mykonos is a lovely place, but very pricey. If we went again, I would go at the end of the season as it is slightly cheaper and you still get the weather.
