Darn, most of the well-traveled travelers visit Florida.
Seriously though...and this IS a serious topic after all: Well-traveled is relative to each person. Individually. It is not a contest.
Someone might be their first person in their family to ever board a plane and fly overseas: to their family they are well-traveled.
Others do not feel they are well traveled until they visit X number of countries. Again...individually relative.

Absolutely "in the eye of the beholder". I've been to Europe half a dozen times and visited all 50 states; so among my peers I am the "well-traveled" one. But here on Fodor's, and on other travel forums, I'm definitely just a beginner.

Cruises
Rick Steves tours
Traveling only outside Europe
Living like the " locals" ( whatever that means )
Having a set itinerary
Researching before the trip
Taking a zillion pictures

danon.. I don't think that the items you mentioned matter THAT much
To be honest, I watched a few of Rick Steves' video clips on YouTube about places where I have lived either 6 or 13 years - and I did not notice any real nonsense.. quite entertaining stuff, especially for first time visitors.. but maybe I missed the "good" videos..
In my book, a well-traveled person
- does not complain that there is no free water
- does not whine about later dinner hours
- wonders if the three hotels mentioned over and over again are really the only options in a city of 3 million
- gets the concept of "unpredictable weather" when traveling to Ireland
- wears his/her white trainers if these are his/her most comfortable shoes
- does not take off his/her shoes at airport security checkpoint on the Continent, but takes out his iPad or laptop computer
- does not look for a border checkpoint when driving from Germany to France to get his/her passport stamped
- is able to adjust his regional or ornamental version of English to plain, basic, simple English

I would add Scotland and a few other places
I am often puzzled when posters declare the wish to live like the" locals"
so they rent an apt. Paris...Rome..Barcelona for a week or so.
As Peter said on another thread, travelers do not work, also, probably, don't speak the language
and don't have to arrange a visit from the cable guy.

It's just another cliche from the trendy travel folks, who always wandering and getting lost savoring the this-and-that and staying in cheap hotels and thinking their experience is more authentic. Utter nonsense.
