best puerto vallarta resort/hotel --not all-inclusive

My husband and I are planning a trip to PV next spring. We have heard from friends that Dreams is a wonderful all inclusive resort--it looks perfect--but we enjoy checking out the local restaurants--to us its a part of the adventure. Does anyone have some good suggestions for something like Dreams--but not all inclusive?

Here are my favorite hotels in order of preference that are not all inclusive. Marriott located at the Marina best in service, my favorite. Sheraton is the one I go to most often because I have made friends with some of the people who work there and it feels like home to us. It has the best location you can walk into town if you like to walk if you do not like to walk then it is a short cab ride. Also have stayed at the Fiesta Americana it is a nice hotel but the service at the front desk left a lot to be desired. They are in my opinion the 3 nicest hotels that are not all inclusive. I too have stayed at what was The Camino Real which is now Dreams but I too do not like to eat dinner every night at the hotel I am staying I like to try the many restaurants Puerto Vallarta has to offer. If you need any suggestions for restaurants please let me know. [email protected]

Hello to all, could someone please post an update to this topic. I'm planning a trip to PVC in November 2013, traveling solo. Like to explore. Any recommendations for the best not all inclusive, near historic points of interest like the old town, also a beach in a walking distance, would be much appreciated. Does not have to be the best beach in town.

sue_e, I most often go solo to Puerto Vallarta, was last there in November of 2012. Great weather usually at that time.

Do you have a price range in mind? If you need a budget hotel, I like Hotel Posada de Roger. The best beach in town just happens to be 2 blocks away (Playa Los Muertos). Really the 'only' beach in the downtown area where people hang out besides the resort beaches.

If you want something a bit nicer you can look at Casa Andrea, The Tropicana, Casa Dona Susana, Vallarta Sun, Hotel Eloisa. These are south-of-the-river (Rio Cuale).

If you want to stay in Centro (north of the river) look at Hotel Rosita, El Pescador, and Hotel Rio.

If you want more expensive, a lot nicer, I'd check out Casa Isabel or Quinta Maria Cortez.

suerte,
suze

You're most welcome. Please feel free to post again if you have any specific questions about any of this.

I've vacationed in Vallarta many times (~20+ trips), been going since the early 90's. Always budget, always in Old Town, most often solo or with one friend.

Besides the hotels I've mentioned above, if you have any interest in an apartment, I like www.vallarta-getaways.com and have rented thru them my most recent two trips. See Unique Old Town Rentals tab.

Hello Suze - this will be my first time in PV and planning to go after xmas into the new year. Expedia ha a nicely priced package at Villa Premier. Do you know anything about this hotel? Or: do you have any hotel recommendations that are on the beach and reasonably priced thank you, in advance , for your help.

Villa Premiere has an excellent reputation. It's in the Hotel Zone just north of Centro (downtown). It is known as one of the nicest properties that is in a central location. It's out of my price range so no 1st hand experience to share.

I've never booked thru Expedia or stayed at a resort so I can't help with respect to that. I stay at budget hotels or apartments in downtown that I book directly.

The other reasonably priced hotels that are right ON the beach, look at Hotel Playa Los Arcos or The Tropicana. Both located on Playa Los Muertos (the main public beach in Zona Romantica/Southside area).

Annergizer, (gotta love that handle) my wife and I have stayed at VPremiere many years and love the facility. Access to restaurants at BuenaVentura next door, adults only, on the beach, small, Mexican, quiet, little vendor hassle, great food/ drinks within blocks (Captain Don's), access two blocks to grocery store, lounge poolside or ten steps into the ocean, short walk to Malecon, hard to beat for the cost if you want a beachfront hotel in town with no in-town congestion. We walk every morning downtown for coffee and then back to the privacy of the VP for the day.
