You can rent a car and then go to and stay in Key Largo as a base for touring the eastern sections of the Everglades and the Keys. Both Key West and the Everglades are a bit of a drive, but the part on the Keys is beautiful.
Perhaps you could take in the Everglades on your way down.
I do not know how you would get to Key Largo without renting a car elsewhere.

We spent 4 nights/5 days in the Keys last June and divided our time between Key West (2 nights) and Key Largo (2 nights). We started out in Key West and were able to park the car at our hotel and do all our sightseeing on foot. We stopped at Bahia Hondo State Park on the way back up to Key Largo. Basing ourselves in Key Largo at the end of our trip made the drive back to the airport in Ft. Lauderdale fairly easy on the day of our departure.
