What do you mean by a 'work visa'?
From what country and for what purpose? For example, if you are under 30 and want to work in a Seasonal job you apply through Bunac. If you want to emmigrate to Canada permanently then you apply for Permanent Resident status. If you are a consultant being sent by your employer to work on a project for a specific length of time, it's different again.
You need to provide more info before anyone can provide any kind of relevant answer to your question.

Given the current economy in Ireland, thousands are trying to find ways to go to another country and find work.
For example, under the 'working holiday' visa program, Irish applicants outnumbered the quota in the first 2 days of it being available this year.

Do you have a profession/trade? What is your motivation for wanting to go to Canada? Do you just want to spend a summer living and working somewhere or is what you really want, what the article I've linked is talking about? People looking for something permanent and using something like the WHV as a way to get in.

Ive a good job. I am an accountant in a big multi national but im very bored and not happy.
I would be looking to work in canada for a year to start with , with a few to whatever happens ie if the want and opportunity to stay longer arises I would way up my options.
I am also 33 and not sure what the cut off for certain visas are.

You can apply under the WHV program to age 35 but as I wrote, those are gone for this year. Read the article. It's clear a lot of your countrymen have the same idea.
Other than that, you would need to look at applying for Permanent Residency. The requirements can all be found from the link laverendrye gave you.
Getting a Permanent Resident visa is all about how many 'point's you score. So first check that here:
