Itinerary tips for Lake Geneva & surroundings...

Hi All,

My wife and I (30 & 35) are planning to go to Lake Geneva the 1st week of August and need some help on the planning.

We live in Paris, so we will drive down 5-6 hours, and would like to spend around 5 days in the area touring the lake; doing hikings, visiting Laussane, Montreux & Evian, maybe Geneva...

We know that this is not the 1st choice of nightlife, but are looking to enjoy a few good local restaurants, if you have any recos.

Any tips that can help us build the itinerary from how long to spend in each place, to things not to be missed will be highly appreciated!

Thanks much!

Well Chateau Chilon would be on most people's list but who knows if you are interested in something like that or not.

Why not do some research or read some guidebooks on the area? To ask for 'things not to be missed' really doesn't mean much does it. People could list hundreds of things they like. That's what guidebooks are for. Forums like this one are not a substitute for doing your own homework really. They are far better at answering specific questions.

For example, if you wrote you would like a suggestion for a day in the mountains near the area I would suggest taking the Golden Panorama train from Montreux to Gsstad. Have lunch in town and take a cable car up the mountain to do a hike.

But I can't say it is 'not to be missed'. Only you can decide that.

My things not to be missed include the weekly street markets (Tues & Sat mornings in Vevey, Fri am in Montreux). I also like Chateau de Chillon, the tram up Rochers de Naye (if the weather is clear), the 'old town' of Montreux, and the lakeside quai in Vevey.

Improviser, suze; thank you so much, I'm always looking for other's experiences to get out of the box and include things I would probably would not have thought...

The Golden Panorama train / Rochers de Naye sounds a wonderful experience and Chateau de Chillon is in the list of recos!

We always try to go to the local markets and enjoy the local products, although our plan doean't turn around it..

Thanks a lot!

I was very pleased with the Bistrot du Boeuf Rouge in Geneva - outstanding food and service. A reservation is recommended.

Ooooh, I just thought of something very exciting (well to me it is).

Later in the summer for a series of weeks at the Vevey Saturday AM market in the square it is called "Marche Folklorique". Each week a winery is featured and you can do tastings for the price of an empty glass you buy. There's a serving bar at tables under the pavillion, but also a wagon that goes around within the market. So you can shop & drink from 9 til Noon. This is a BIG local social event where the neighborhood comes out those particular Saturdays to drink and socialize (and shop).

Also usually live music, like an orchestra or band.
