I would look for a flight to Naples and then take the shuttle bus to Sorrento (10€). Otherwise, it will be multiple trains/changes and a full day of travel (just Geneva/Milan will take about 4 hours on the fast train).

Or you could take a train from Switzerland to say Milan and then take an overnight rain to Naples - save on a hotel and have the experience of an overnight train - flying could be cheaper however. For lots of great stuff on overnight trains and trains in general check out these IMO fantastic sites - www.seat61.com; www.ricksteves.com and www.budgeteuropetravel.com. Check www.trenitalia.com for discounted tickets on the night train and from Switzerland to Milan (if you have a Swiss Pass of some type use it to Domodossola then book a Domodossola to Milan ticket at trenitalia.com.

Geneva or Lausanne to Milan from €22 at Swiss Railways http://www.sbb.ch

Allow at least 45 min to change trains in Milan - or plan to have a meal.

Milan to Naples from €29 at Italian Railways www.trenitalia.com at high speed in just 4 or 5 hours.

Naples to Sorrento in 50 minutes every 30 mins for less than €5 on the Circumvesuviana railway.

those cheap fares come with several caveats that should be mentioned with them IMO - non-changeable, non-refundable and limited in number - meaning you must book in stone months in advance to guarantee and also typically spend hours on trenitalia.com to book as that site draws constant complaints from flummoxed novice users. But though they ain't as easy or great as used-train salesmen make them out to be if willing to put in time and patience and set your plans in stone months in advance can save a ton of money.

Both prices listed by man in seat 61 are advance purchase discounts. Regular walk up price for each is about the same - 95chf for Geneva/Milan and 95€ for Milan/Naples. I've never seen sbb.ch list the price in euro so would imagine man in seat 61 meant chf, not euro. The discount normally seen for that (Supersaver) is either 23chf or 27chf. I've never had any problems booking online in advance on sbb.ch. Very easy. Trenitalia can be a bit more finicky (people booking the wrong date or credit card problem).

I see flights on Easy Jet Geneva/Naples for 50chf. Checking a piece of luggage adds another 24ch and paying by credit card instead of debit will tack on 1-2 chf (depends on price of ticket). There's also a 5chf fee to select your seat in advance. Would still be cheaper than one leg on the train at full fare. Under 2 hours travel time versus 9+ by train.
