No-one could answer this question with any certainty. You have less chance of good weather in mid October than in mid July or August, but you could experience rain, cold, sun or hail in any of those months.
People will tell you that they went to Scotland in such and such a month and had great/terrible/hot/wet/cold weather, but there is nothing to say that that because they had it, you will.

Due to tides, meteorological patterns, jet stream, etc., the whole of the British Isles (including Eire) is a complete weather crapshoot. Odds are less favorable for bright sunny days and warmth in October.

I've been in Scotland several times during the first two weeks in October. Yes, weather is unpredictable. I've experienced it all, but yet to see a midgie in October. I wouldn't hesitate to go just be prepared

What do you mean by "better weather".. If you mean warm and sunny - that's not typical of Scotland at any time. If you mean not too cold to enjoy touring - that time should be fine (don't expect snow or ice - but you can get just about anything else).

The weather would not stop us from touring - but we are from a climate with a real winter and a city where you g out walking in all weathers (including rain and snow).
If you are from a tropical area you might find the cold unbearable and may not want to do anything outdoors just because of a little rain (which should affect you only if you plan on camping).
