Good midway rest between York and Gatwick
I am in York right now with my mother having driven down from Haltwhistle this morning via a beautiful, scenic route suggested by our B&B host. We are set to check out this Saturday morning and drive to Crawley, have a rest that Sunday, then leave early Monday morning for flights home. What I have learned driving the last few days is that I don't want to do a long five to six hour drive all at once. Even leaving early, it just takes out the ability, for me, to stop along the way and really see what surrounds us.
This being the case, I am hoping to change our plans if possible and wondered what places you would suggest for a mid-way point to stop for the night. I have looked at the maps, but I know that some places are more enjoyable than others, even in terms of ease of getting in and out. I am not looking for exact distance middle, rather a good breaking down of the drive, or even if you think it would be just as well to knuckle down and go the entire distance.
Thank you so much! Also, I can't tell you how helpful all your advice has been to me on my trip! Especially travel times and how-tos of trains! I hope to get a trip report written at some point.

Stamford http://www.georgehotelofstamford.com/ is a little gem just up from the river and you do not want the rooms at the front but probably too close to York, Cambridge is maybe too perfect, St Ives or Huntingdon (Cromwell came from around here) has a nice little river to sit over at http://www.dolphinhotelcambs.co.uk/
It is trifle warm in Yorkshire at the moment (had to happen after 3 years of cold).
