seeking a small quirky restaurant that is like a home, e.g. Heidi's House

Hi there,
Before I start, I need to state that my question is genuine....
This thread was previously on yesterday, before one of the members kindly highlighted it as 'touting/spam'. I have now been reinstated by Fodor to rewrite my original post now that I have proved my credibility.

I have been in New York for 2 months and am here for a further 1 month.
I am trying to find a restaurant that is like a home, i.e. very homely, small, lots of character and atmosphere due to the quaint surroundings, with a friendly service and great food.
Up to now, I have only found one option, to which I have already been, which is calling Heidi's House.
(N.B. Second disclaimer, I am in no way touting Heidi's House. For two reasons: I am not here for long enough to need to do this, and secondly it is always full)
I merely think that Heidi's is a fantastic option, and am now seeking to find a similar alternative or two to try out. The location is Manhattan.
Up to now, one person has suggested Elizabeth's Neighborhood Table, which as an option is heading in the right direction.

I hope that someone can be of assistance in advising of similar 'homely' style restaurants in Manhattan, because I have searched high and low on the internet but can't find anything as yet.

Many thanks

I haven't eaten there, but I've often walked by this place and thought it looked welcoming and good. http://www.deuxamisnyc.com/index.html

Two places come to mind that meet your criteria:

Chumley's (which is most amazing on a snowy winter day)

and

Kitchenette (in Tribeca on Chambers Street)

Go to Kitchenette - one of my clients is the owner and it's really good! Also really fun to explore the Tribeca area, used to work down there.

Awesome. Thanks for the replies so far.
I visited the kitchenette last night to check it out. (the south one)
It seems great. cool toilets aswell.
I will definitely go there to eat, but I think for brunch as opposed to dinner, as it seems perhaps more geared towards this.

Thanks for the Deux Amis suggestion.

Chumley's is closed apparently!

If I found a restaurant like kitchenette, with higher-end food, then it would be perfect!!

I am stumped by your question. NY generally does not do quaint.

Take a peek at the following and see if the fit your criteria:

Keen's
Ear Inn
26 Seats (East Village)
Le Gigot
Lady Mendl's
http://www.nytimes.com/restaurants/1...n/details.html

Tartine

And we have not been there but Alice's Tea Cup

When someone says quaint they are seeking an evocative and emotional atmosphere, specifcally to them.

Elizabeth's Kitchen touts itself as having very select ingredients that are as "natural" as possible.

It's not small - fairly large actually - and the food is OK - not great., It's right in my area so we have been several times - not deliberately but as an easy option to meet people.

Can't comment on if it's a good deal - since "homey" is NOT something we look for in a restaurant.

I agree with mclaurie. Table d'Hote is a tiny little place just below street level on 92nd Street just east of Madison. Well-executed, not necessarily elaborate French food. Reasonably-priced wine list. Friendly service.

And Big Al's recommendation of Le Gigot, a tiny bistro on Cornelia Street off Sixth Avenue in the Village, is spot on. Enter this little place and you're in Paris. We were just there on July 5; it hasn't lost any of its charm.
