HI,
Can anyone please advise me on how to spend my days in munich for 4 days 3 night? This is my first time visiting Munich with my 7 years old son and my mum. what are the interesting place to see and is it difficult to travel around the city to the castle for sight seeing?

I will be going there on 27 Sept - 30 Sept. I know its during the oct fest, and most of the hotel are fully booked But can anyone recommend the hotel which is inexpensive and has a good location with eating and a bit of shopping? Im in a tight budget as I will be travelling for 14 days in munich, swiss, and paris.

well I don't know much about munich, because it's one on my list "next travels", but maybe I could suggested some cheep and comfortable transport.
may I know what transport you decide to chosen?

If you are not going to or interested in Oktoberfest, I would stay on the outskirts of town. Munich will be flooded with people during these 2 weeks. Also, you might want to look into renting an apartment. We were able to find a nice one relatively inexpensively while we were there. The website we used was
www.checkin-muenchen.de. Other sites wanted too much or were sold out. Maybe near Erding.

Will you have access to a car?

I really enjoyed going to Fussen to the castles. Also, I absolutely loved my time in Berchtesgaden. It is a national park right on the border of Austria and it is gorgeous. You could visit the Eagle's Nest (Hitler's home in the alps). Also, Dachau. While it is not a site you want to visit, it is a site you should visit.

There will be no "inexpensive" hotels or gasthaus in Munich during Oktoberfest. Your best bet is to stay in a town well outside of Munich and take public transit into town.

I have actually checked with this tour John Bavarian in munich, and he offered me a one day private tour to some castle in a day. or 1 day to salzburg. Each tour cost 590 euro for 1 day for 5 person. I"m not sure if I could find a cheaper tour in munich, but I guess, It will be a better plan for me travelling to see munich without hassle with my old mother and my kid

I wouldn't botehr with expensive tours becasue it's so easy to sue public transport. The tram/underground/bus system is very easy to find your way around Munich itself, and you can get further afield by train.

One place I'd recommend is Schloss Nymphenburg, one of the palaces of the dukes/kings of Bavaria, which is easily reached by tram from the city centre. If you go to Berchtesgaden to see the Eagles' Nest you can also see the Konigliches Schloss there (a minor royal residence).

Nymphenburg is a former summer palace set in parkland, with several buildings set in the palace grounds that you can also visit - and which I personally prefer to the palace. Munich has an excellent zoo, some great museums including a science museum that has plenty to interest children as well as adults, art galleries etc. The "English Garden" (Englischer Garten), a large park in the English style in the north of the city is also worth visiting/wandering around, with a beer garden at the foot of a full-sized Chinese pagoda, where you can eat a meal or just have a beer, wine or a soft drink. Go to the Viktualienmarkt as well, the large open-air fresh food market in the city centre, dotted around with statues of various comedians and caberet artists who made their name in Munich.

You are proposing staying in Munich when the city is at its most crowded and I can confirm that you won't find anywhere that's cheap during the Oktoberfest unless you strike lucky and someone has cancelled a reservation just before you were trying to book. Of the places to stay outside the city I would recommend Dachau, Freising, Starnberg or Herrsching. The first two are old towns with some interesting buildings, although surrounded by newer suburbss built in the last 100 years for the commuters who didn't want to live in Munich. Starnberg and Herrsching are towns on lakes near Munich and both have seasonal tourism, so you may be able to find something less pricey as you are visiting after the schools go back. Good luck with the hunt for accommodation and enjoy your trip.

Thank you so much all for your kind reply and suggestions. Im feeling excited already as this is my first time travelling with my son to Europe to celebrate my birthday. Im from Indonesia, so, this will be the first long journey holiday and I hope we will enjoy it. Im stopping over in Munich because he just had a school project about October Fest, and I want him to experience the real one after his presentation last month.

Grindeldoo, your suggestion about visiting the science museum is a great idea. My son loves Science. Thank you so much.

Aside from the O'fest/hotel problems, Munich is a fabulous place to visit at that time of year. If you can't find a hotel you might check Augsburg or other close-by towns.

The Deutches (science) Museum will be a highlight for the whole party. Even though it is a beer hall and your son is 7 consider the Bavarian Folk Evening show at 7 pm each night on the 3rd floor of the Hofbrau Haus (get reservations). You will learn to navigate the local mass transit. Nymphenburg Palace has a wonderful carraige house full of Cinderella coaches. Dachau is easy to get to and a moving historical visit that you could consider. I would skip the Residence.

A day trip to Neuschwanstein is possible on a bus tour or on the train to do it yourself. The "other" castle Hohenschwangau is in my opinion more interesting than Neuschwanstein but you should see them both. Another super day trip is Salzburg, use the Bayern ticket (€29 for up to 5 people to travel anywhere in Bavaria, including Salzburg).

A warm weather picnic in the Englisher Garten is a Munich speciality. Go to the Viktualien Markt near Marien Platz to pick up your supplies. The beer gardens in the park allow you to bring your own food if you buy your drinks.
