bus from Istanbul - Ephesus: where to stop mid way
2 women in early 60's in Turkey in August. We plan to take the bus from Istanbul to Ephesus/Selcuk,. 10 hours on the bus is too much for us and we have time for an overnight stop somewhere on the way. Any suggestions ? We like history, culture, nature, local foods and crafts, walking. We prefer bus, boat or train to plane or rental car. Not ritzy but comfortable is good. In good health and physically able.

Why don't you take the fast ferry to Bandirma from Yenikapi, Istanbul and then a 5-6 hour bus to Izmir from Bandirma?
You may also check the train from Bandirma to Izmir although it may be rather slow even if it is running. The ferry landing is just next to the train station. You can then take another train to Selcuk/Ephesus from Izmir.

I checked and found that trains are running but they do not match the ferry schedules, especially the morning train leaves long before the ferry arrives.
However, you may wish to check IDOBUS, which is ferry+bus combination offered by the ferry company which is called IDO.

Another option would (I think) be Bursa. I thought it well worth visiting for its history, architecture, and markets (among other things). But if you go, you might want more than just an overnight stop, or you might at least want to ensure that you have enough time to spend in Bursa to make it worth your time.
Hope that helps!

Better still, avoiding long bus journeys, fast ferry across the Sea of Marmara to Bandirma (www.and air-conditioned express train through the scenery to Izmir, http://www.seat61.com/Turkey2.htm#Istanbul_to_Izmir .
Next day there are regular train departures from Izmir to Selcuk (Ephesus), http://www.tcdd.gov.tr/Upload/Files/...bassokeayd.pdf

Thank you very much for the helpful ideas. I am looking into the ferry plus train idea. I think we can arrange it ourselves. But if we have trouble, can a travel agency like Backpacker arrange the ferry and train tickets for us ?
