Going to the Sun Road

The GTTS Road is anticipated to open Friday noon June 21 weather dependent. As of Thursday afternoon we have heavy rain in lower elevations and snow falling in higher elevations with approx. 1 inch of slush on the road. Temperature at Oberlin Bend Thursday afternoon, which is just west of Logan Pass , is 30 degrees fahrenheit. Crews are working to remove mud and rock debris from yesterday's heavy rain

Your choice of course. Red bus tours will give you a running commentary of the road and local "flavor" and of course leaving the driving to him. However you are at the mercy of the driver as far as stopping along the road for pictures etc.
Remember also that you can drive wherever the bus goes and can stop when and where you want for as long as you want.
Keep in mind also that there is a FREE shuttle bus that begins operation July 1 and travels the lenght of the road dropping you off and picking you up at desingnated bus stops. This is a shuttle ONLY, no commentary.
Again, your choice. Enjoy your visit.

Just back and did the GTS road twice: first driving it ourselves then taking the Red Bus tour. We enjoyed the freedom of stopping at every spectacular view that required a photo ifrom ur car, which we missed on the tour. My husband found it more relaxing to be driven, but we were jammed into the back row of the bus and views were obstructed. The bus was pretty much older folks and the commentary was pretty casual.

I'm not the bus tour kind of person. I like to drive when I want, where I want and stop for as long as I want.

Last summer I stayed at Rising Sun. As we drove out a Red Jammer bus was loading people directly from their tour bus.

We pass them a couple of time along GTTS Road. I saw them at one stopping point. About half the people got off to walk around, read the info postings and get general views.

The other half just sat in the bus and some just talked and didn't bother to walk around or really pay much attention to the views.

Yes, they do the driving. Not for me.

Obviously, many (not all as some people take the bus tours during multi-day visits) people are there for very short visits and can now say they went to Glacier NP.
